Unblocking your way
Take steps toward building confidence and overcoming fears that might be blocking your way to progressing in your life.
Being brave is not about the absence of fear, it’s about having the courage to be vulnerable – to press on in spite of fear.
5 Tricks for Overcoming Fear
Let’s dive a little more into tackling fear with a video!
Why We're Afraid
- We tend to be afraid when we perceive some harm or threat to ourselves (or others). Some fears are legitimate, but others do more harm than good.
- We’re also afraid because we worry about being vulnerable. With vulnerability comes the possibility of uncertainty, hurt, or risk. However, being vulnerable also opens you to love, connection, and empathy. Learning to accept vulnerability as a fact of life can help you worry less about your fears.
- One way to be brave is to accept that everything is a risk. All the things you do in a day — from getting out of bed to eating dinner — carry some level of risk. But that doesn't stop you from living your life. Neither should the things you're afraid of.
- The fear of failure is another very common fear. Try to think of things not in terms of failure or success but in terms of what you can learn from them. This way, all things are helpful in some way, even if it isn't in the way you expected.
A time in your life you had to be brave?
Now, try to think of the first time in your life when either someone told you to be brave or you realized you did something that made you brave. When/what was it?
You're already doing it!
Notice every time you do something that you’re scared to do, you’ll start to realize that you do these things all the time. You’re already much braver than you think. This is particularly true of shy people for whom daily life requires them to smile in the face of fear.
Positive > Negative
Learn to focus on positive signals and to discount negative ones. It’s natural to have a “negativity bias” that causes us to pay more attention to disapproval than to positive reinforcement. When this happens, focus on the positive things going on. Imagine leading a discussion in one of the group support rooms. You’ll be nervous about all the things that could go wrong but instead concentrate on the people who are there for you and looking for healing within the discussion. You’re bettering their lives by providing them a positive experience.
Role Models
When you’re trying to stretch yourself beyond your apparent limits, there’s a part of you that wonders whether it can actually be done. A role model is a constant reminder that the answer is yes.
Who’s a role model of bravery to you?
