Types of Anxiety: How can social anxiety impact you?

Social anxiety can have a big impact on your life. It is not just feeling shy; social affects people's confidence in themselves, relationships, work/school life and everyday activities.

People with social anxiety may worry about:

  • Meeting new people
  • Starting conversations
  • Speaking on the phone
  • Going to work
  • Going shopping
  • Being in a group of people
  • Eating with others
  • Going to parties
  • Doing something embarrassing
  • Feeling like people are watching you 
  • Being criticised
  • Making eye contact

As you can see, there are lots of reasons that people may feel anxious in a social situation. Because of this anxiety, they may begin to experience physical symptoms of anxiety, including nausea, sweating, shaking, a pounding heartbeat, or panic attacks. 

Ask yourself: When have you felt anxious in social situations? What helped you to feel less stressed in this situation?
