The Window of Tolerance
Understanding the window of tolerance and how it effects our ability to cope
We all have a window of tolerance. That window of tolerance can change based on what we are experiencing at various points in our life. When we are within our window of tolerance we are able to cope with stressors and life a lot easier. When we are outside of our window of tolerance we are either hyperaroused or hypoaroused and our ability to cope with stressors and think clearly is reduced. The goal is to stay within our window of tolerance, however people who have experienced a lot of trauma often have a more narrow window and so learning ways to widen our window of tolerance can help us get through life easier.
