The Stop Technique

The Stop technique is a method used to help you ground yourself and relax when panic and anxiety begin to get overwhelming.

Stop

  • Interrupt your anxiety with the mental command 'stop' and pause the thing that you're doing currently. 

Take a breath

  • Try to focus on your breathing for a second. You can breathe in slowly through the nose, focus on your belly expanding, and exhale slowly out of your mouth. 

Observe

  • Try to observe your thoughts, feelings and emotions, as well as how you're feeling physically. What thoughts and emotions are you experiencing? How are you feeling?

Proceed

  • Consider how you'd like to react to the stressful situation. You could ask yourself: What do I need to focus on right now? What is most important/ my top priority right now?
