Step 11: Writing Your Personal Mission Statement
A personal mission statement is your personal constitution. You decide what you want to become and do during your life and write those goals and dreams down. Your personal mission statement will help you become clear about what values and principles you want to use to guide your life. Your mission statement “becomes . . . the basis for making daily decisions in the midst of the circumstances and emotions that affect our lives” (Covey, 1989, p. 108).
Some examples of goals might include the following: I will be a loving and honest person. I want to get married and have children. I want to be active in my religious community. I want to live in harmony with God’s will for me. I want to go to college and get my bachelor’s degree. I want to write a book. I want to travel to Europe.
Using your answers and reflections to the previous step (Getting in Touch with Your Desires and Visions) as well as the concept of a personal constitution, write your Personal Mission Statement in the box below. We encourage you to make a commitment and promise to yourself and to God that you will act in accordance with your vision and mission.
