Addressing Different Student Needs
Addressing the diverse needs and styles of your students may be challenging - it is important to establish communication and rapport with students in order to facilitate different needs. Here are some tips to help:
- Get to know your students. What are their interests? Learn more about the things they are engaged in and consider using the different interests to build rapport by discussing them during breaks or other periods of free time.
- Pay attention to their different styles of learning. Some students pick up visual information more easily, while others can manage to grasp your lectures without much guidance.
- Include variation in your teaching. Now that you have noticed some patterns and interests, include different levels and variations to address them. You may consider including images or other helpful instructions/guidance, or can use activities like group work guidance for struggling students and extra optional activities for students who find it easy to follow your lead. This variation not only addresses different needs but ensures a collaborative classroom experience.
- Consider diverse communication channels. While you may host open office hours or other accessible discussion opportunities, some students may prefer communicating via email or other means - having flexible options may help.
