General Assistance (WorkFirst NJ)

Based in Toms River, NJ, General Assistance's WorkFirst NJ (WFNJ) program is dedicated to providing critical support to those in need through Emergency Assistance (EA). Our mission is to alleviate hardship by offering essential resources such as food assistance, clothing, shelter, and household furnishings. We also provide temporary rental assistance, help with overdue rent or mortgage payments, and utility payment assistance to ensure families can maintain stability. Additional services include transportation for housing searches and support for moving expenses. While Emergency Assistance is generally available for up to 12 months, we understand that circumstances may require additional help, and extensions can be granted under specific hardship conditions. If you have lost employment after at least 20 weeks of work through no fault of your own, our program can also connect you to state unemployment benefits and further welfare assistance after those benefits expire.
