Dr. John Caffaro

Dr. John Caffaro is a distinguished Marriage and Family Therapist with a PhD and over 25 years of clinical experience. He specializes in treating adult survivors of interpersonal childhood trauma, with a particular focus on issues such as depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Through his trauma-informed approach, Dr. Caffaro addresses psychological distress stemming from complex relational trauma. He is trained in various effective modalities, including EMDR, experiential psychodynamic psychotherapy, and adopts an integrative strengths-based relational perspective in both individual and group psychotherapy settings. Dr. Caffaro has authored two seminal books on Sibling Abuse Trauma and has published numerous peer-reviewed papers, solidifying his status as an expert in the field. As an Advisory Board Member of the Sibling Aggression and Abuse Research and Advocacy Initiative (SAARA) at the University of New Hampshire, he actively contributes to research and advocacy efforts. Additionally, Dr. Caffaro serves as a Distinguished Professor at the California School of Professional Psychology and is an Assistant Clinical Professor at the UCSD Medical School, Department of Psychiatry. He is also an AAMFT Approved Supervisor and a Fellow in four divisions of the APA, providing consultation to clinicians and forensic settings, demonstrating his commitment to advancing the treatment of relational trauma.
