W𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐞𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐟 𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐞 𝐟𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐦 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮?

Some personal experiences that have shaped my understanding of gender inequality are how my brother got a whole floor of our house with two bathrooms, a pool room, living room and more all to himself while my sister and I had small rooms on a shared floor with my parents.

My parents had their own two piece bathroom, but we all shared a shower and bathtub while my brother had his own two piece by his room and a shower, washer drier and more down the hall.

He also rarely had to do any chores, and was allowed to bring friends on family vacations or even to live with us, because "he didn't have a brother to spend time with". I was sexually assaulted by at least three of his friends.

In school and life there was and is a 'boys will be boys' mentality. This led to me being assaulted many more times and continues in many ways to this day. I didn't or don't even think to report it anymore or really talk about it; it is just normal for women to be used by men...part of growing up and learning and because the process of going through the courts and seeking help is so full of stigma, judgement and humiliation.

My dad used fear to control us. He'd treat me with contempt when I showed 'weaker' feelings like doubt or when I cried. He wasn't supportive. As problems go back they seem to unearth more and more vile behaviour and levels of ignorance, leaving each new generation to fight to pick up the pieces and try keep themselves whole in this genocide against equality and freedom. Many aren't making it or haven't made it, and many today won't make it.

I find feminism impactful... especially when learning about Ruth Bader Ginsburg or while volunteering or working for a shelter or women's centre or even in a conversation. It's real and seems to effect everyone, and is another thing we must integrate into our lives and be aware of, yet there's still so much ignorance and inequality. Other times I'm just numb, or focused on trying to survive or eke some joy out of life without any energy left to contemplate or tackle such a massive issue.
