Not sure how to proceed.

SapphireSoul May 31st, 2016

Hello everyone. I am a survivor of sexual abuse by a family member (not blood related). I am currently trying to find a therapist who specializes in EMDR therapy so that I can get more information about the nature of what happened. I have not consciously known about this for long. I only had my first flashback last year so it's a relatively new thing for me to be dealing with. The thing is, this person is a pastor at a church and is working with children so I will need to have my facts straight because my family will be pressing legal action. Has anyone else gone through the legal process for this before? Are there any tips? Anything I should know or be prepared for beforehand? What to expect? I'm not really sure how to proceed other than trying my best to find a good therapist and keeping a journal of what's in my head and what memories I have. Thanks!

I don't have any experience or information to help you with your pending court case against your abuser. However, I want to give my support and love for fighting something that I'm sure is very challenging. I can't imagine the pain of having to relive something so horrible. I hope you are able to find the peace and justice you deserve!

Good luck and take care! heart

Having never experienced the legal side of things because my statute of limitations had passed when I went to press charges, I can't help with that. I can however give you a find a therapist link for EMDR trained therapists. Good luck in your search and process.

@KristenHR What is the statute of limitations for molestation? I was around 8 years old at the time and I'm 23 now.

You'll need to see what it is in your state. Some states limitations start so many years from when it happened, while others start from the point you remembered. Just depends on how your state handles these cases. My state was from what it last happened.
