Expectations

amiablePeace77 October 20th, 2021

There was a farmer sitting on his porch in a rocking chair. They were remembering their youth when they used to ride fast horses. They were kind of sad because they did not ride anymore.

So the farmer said to themself, "I am going to buy a fast horse." So they went to town to the livery stable where they found a person selling a race horse. "Has it run fast?" the farmer asked. The man replied "Very fast." So the farmer bought the horse and took it home and saddled it up. Then the horse started to walk but would not go fast.

So the farmer brought the horse back and told the man the horse did not trot or gallop. "Well last time I rode them, they went very fast." the man said. So the farmer asked when the man last rode them. "The man replied "Well I guess it was twenty years ago."

That is the problem I face, when I have expectations that life is going to be like it was "twenty years ago." I suffer when I have my eyes on the past and expect that life will be the same as it was back then. I am having to change my expectations so I can get at peace with myself.

What are your expectations and how realistic are they for where you are at this point in life?

@amiablePeace77 one example of having to adjust my expectations was when a relationship changed. The other person was not living up to my expectations that they used to live up to. So I had a choice, argue and suffer with this situation that did not seem to change, or start living without preconceived ideas of how our relationship would work. It was a slow adjustment with some bumps along the way but I am making progress and feeling less stress trying to change something I cannot change.

@soulsings

You came to an incredible awareness soul. Trying to change something we can't is just frustrating, accepting it allows to feel happy again.

In my opinion the source of suffering comes from our need to control the things we can’t.

Wise thinking AllieLecht. I believe trusting ourselves, being self confident helps to be okay with the uncontrollable.

@AllieLecht I completely agree with you.

I strongly believe that labelling things as realistic or unrealistic limits our willpower to achieve them.

I would love to have a peaceful life with my family and fiancee around me, specialize in Clinical Psychology and treat my patients as a great doctor with the help of my expertise in Medicine and Psychology. I want to help people selflessly even those who cannot return the favour.

How about you?

@lyricalAngel70

This is a great attitude to become a good doctor! I like that you want to help everyone, even those who cannot return the favour.

My hopes are to be able (mentally and physically) to continue my work here, improve my skills and knowledge and keep on enjoying what I have already, living peacefully.
