One thing Therapy Taught me was…?

Desmynn6789 April 15th, 2022

Hello everyone😊! Todays post is going to be about what therapy taught. Therapy can teach us a lot of things, and sometimes it can be helpful to share what we learned.

  • What is something Therapy taught you?

I look forward to seeing your responses❤️

@HalKhatunBraunDiploma a very good first step is to open up "the closet" and see what is in there.

Live in the present. You can't change anything that happened in the past, no matter how bad it was.

It's not bad to have memories...remember the good times

@peachJet1954 I agree now is the time in which we live.

@Desmynn6789 There have been several times in my life when I sought therapy. I promptly turned down any mention of anti depressants. At the time I understood the main “theory” behind these drugs was a “chemical imbalance in the brain” which I did not trust. My depression was situational. I wanted to learn how to change my circumstances, and that should be the goal of my therapy. I was rather astounded how this drug was suggested so enthusiastically and without a lot of discussion with me and certainly no medical lab tests. One time, my life really felt extremely depressing, and I strongly considered taking this kind of drug. But this time I also read about the risks which they say are rare (including blindness and Tardive dyskinesia). I was practically harangued by medical doctors and therapists to try this drug. One therapist said I either (A) agree to the drug or (B) find another therapist. So I promptly choose (B) and searched google for therapy without drugs. I found Dr David Burns on aTED talk. I bought his book, “Feeling Good” and found a therapist trained in Dr Burns method of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (called TEAM CBT). I literally could have used his book without also getting a therapist, but the therapist really helped accelerate the process. The therapy made practical sense (not some mumbo jumbo about connecting to my inner child or repeating some affirmations I didn’t believe). The therapy was about identifying why I felt bad by looking at what I was telling myself at the time I started feeling bad. There is a small set of common things humans tell themselves that leads to depression. There are also a small set of tools to fit each of those common thoughts. And it is relatively easy to learn and the therapy is relatively quick. It did take a small effort to do some of the “homework”, but it really was worth it. What I have learned from this therapy has been continuously useful. It is simple, but difficult to sufficiently describe in a few sentences. If you’re interested in CBT I suggest you google and check out Dr Burns TED talk and see if it interests you. By the way, he has a newer book called Feeling Great, and I think his older book, “Feeling Good” has a more understandable format.

@helpfulAvocado7912 I am glad you have found a method that works for you. That is really a comfoeting thing to find the therapy that you feel respects your beliefs.

7cups Online Therapy does not involve any meds, just a communication with your therapist and them with you.

@courageousGrotto48 well said.

I like this quote "The mind is the source of my happiness." I remind myself of that when I start thinking of how I am not happy.
