Therapy today first time in years
I talked to a psychologist today for the first time in a really long time. After our discussion she recommended I meet with a psychiatrist.
What should I expect from a psychiatrist?
Will I have to go over everything again if they both can see each others notes?
Will the psychiatrist or psychologist diagnose me?
I'm confused as you can tell.
Hi @Mischievous14 - thanks for bringing up that question.
Some therapists do diagnose. If you could ask the therapist why they recommended a psychiatrist, they could speak for themselves.
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor and is usually involved in diagnosing and prescribing medicine treatment as necessary because many mental health conditions are dysfunctioning of the brain that medicine can offset.
Many therapists only use talk therapy as a means of treating challenges we face.
So hope that answers some of your questions. Some psychiatrists also try to talk things through with patients also.

You do an amazing job here at 7cups.
You are a gem.
You truly are, my friend.
no you won't have to explain everything. this other doctor prescribes medication so she will most likely ask you questions about medication and do follow ups with you.
@Person94 Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us.
Thanks for showing your support of this member.
Thanks really good that you get therapy. I agree that getting mental health counseling is good and effective in overcoming the mental health issues that people are facing. By getting therapy I believe that you will be able to overcome your issue and live your life happily without any kind of issue.
First, I want to congratulate your effort in reaching out to help with your situation.
"Both psychologists and psychiatrists talk with you about the problems and challenges you’re facing. But their different educational backgrounds allow them to focus on, treat, and approach those issues differently. Psychologists tend to focus on your behavior patterns. Psychiatrists also look at your behavior patterns, but they have a stronger understanding of biology and neurochemistry as well. This allows them to provide a wider range of treatments. "
Generally, psychologists treat conditions that don't require medication. Psychiatrists on the other hand tend to treat complex conditions that require medical treatment and psychological evaluations
