Narcissist Wife

DodgingTraps August 15th, 2023

I currently have a therapist. My therapist has met my wife and she calls usually right before my appointments. I thought I was going to therapy for something else at first. I asked my therapist if I was a narcissist or BPD and he said not at all. The very next session after the session he met my wife, he said Iโ€™m dealing with not only her being a narcissist, but also sounds like her mother is too. The therapist said that it could be possible I have married into a narcissistic family and anything I ever do will never be enough. My wife said she was going to sue my therapist. She got pretty pissy last Friday when she called and my therapist was with patients and she didnโ€™t get to talk to him. She controls absolutely everything and then complains about her having to do it. Itโ€™s all new territory to me and Iโ€™m try my best to find ways to deal with if for the sake of my children.

Dealing with a narcissistic spouse and their family can be a total nightmare, and it's so frustrating when they try to control everything and then complain about it. First things first, it's amazing that you've got a therapist in your corner. You're not the problem here. Your therapist seems to recognize the narcissistic behavior and wants to help you through it.

Setting boundaries is key. Let your wife know what you're willing to put up with and what you won't tolerate. Be clear about your needs and expectations. For example, you could tell her that certain times or activities are just for you, and she shouldn't disturb you during those moments. And when it comes to making decisions, make it crystal clear that you have a say and that your opinions matter.

Emotional boundaries are just as important. Try to communicate to your wife that you won't stand for any verbal abuse or manipulation. You deserve to be treated with respect and kindness, no ifs, ands, or buts. It might take some time for her to adjust, but stay strong and don't back down.

When it comes to parenting, it is important to establish shared responsibilities and approaches. If you haven't already, try having a conversation with her to let her know that you have an equal say in raising your children and that she can't make all the decisions without considering your input. It's a partnership and your voice matters

Easier said than done. Iโ€™m not sure if itโ€™s just me, but I kind of feel like being a man kind of is a disadvantage, especially in my situation. Itโ€™s like I have to just shut up and go with whatever. There is no physical abuse, that is a plus. Itโ€™s mainly manipulation and controlling. Iโ€™m really not allowed to go anywhere or I am being selfish. I use to do some volunteer work 2 hours a month on the same day every month and that was too much time away. I work 40-50 hrs a week. For almost 2 years know, my only social life is my therapist. Iโ€™ve asked for her to see a therapist for years now. We have been married for 5 years next month. 3 year old and 11 year old

@DodgingTraps I am sorry you have a wife that is controlling. Sometimes someone like that can teach us how to have boundaries and living the way we need to without caving in.

TRIGGER WARNING

"for the sake of my children", I should have left. But she ultimately blindsided me and took everything I own (just about) and she married what used to be my friend and my oldest daughter took her own life - Your dealing with fire and never forget that! Long story short, don't get sick or she might make alternate plans like mine did. Build a nest egg to fall back on just in case my friend. I suffered narcissistic abuse for 17 years and have been in therapy ever since.

Blessings, Day

A person with narcissistic traits typically feels that they canโ€™t do anything wrong. When confronted about mistakes, they will be defensive, and might deny your reality or recollection of events. Phrases such as โ€œit wasnโ€™t that bad,โ€ โ€œyou must be losing your mind,โ€ย andย โ€œit didnโ€™t happen like thatโ€ย are common statements employed to make you deny your truth.ย

Narcissistic triangulationย occurs when a person tries to bring a third person into a conflict to benefit them.

Cut ties when able, try to avoid contact with a narcissist.

Narcissists will often employ manipulation tactics to gain additional power and control, or get what they want.

5 years isn't 10 or 20... the data shows that she's not going to snap out of this behavior... it's not too late to leave and start again. Unfortunately and as tragic as it is to hear, everyone who knows this disorder says to run the opposite way as soon, as fast and as far as you can. I'm sorry there are children. They will be used as pawns and puppets most likely. Divorcing her will drag you thru mud puddles, demasculinate and leave you without a roof over your head... she will attempt to ruin you.. she could be successful by the time you stand up and fight back.

@DodgingTraps. Have you thought you getting a second opinion? I do not know you or your wife but this sounds like a critical situation and all options should be considered before further choices lead to any consequences. I want you to ensure your children's emotional security and yours too a second opinion wont hurt and working through a plan for the family including your wife is also a good option. All the best <3ย

I feel for you man! I think it's great that you're so worried about your children... Not many would be able to . That said the family unrest will not help the children either. So if you try and you're still unable to resolve this it may be best to instead see what you can do to walk away while keeping your children safe and protected with you. You might want to talk to your children directly, small as they are and get their opinions too

Narcissist is dangerous, they envy their own children, they may use manipulation or even physical abuse to maintain control over a situation. The world is better off without the narcissist.ย
