Tips with OCD skin picking?
I have been a long time skin picker and it is has caused me to be insecure of my body, leading to unhealthy ways of seeing myself. Any tips or advice would be appreciated.
Hi @Liz444 sorry you have repetitive skin picking. Some people try to develop an awareness of when they are doing that and then do some other action like massaging their hands.
Mindfulness is something that helps me deal with habits. Like this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oKE8IiK3O1U

@Liz444 I have had problems with this and I started buffing my fingernails when I need to keep my hands busy.
I have been a skin picker for many years and there are a few things that have helped me:
-keeping nails short and rounded
-learning about skin picking (I read a book)
-talked to people about it and trying to remember that it is okay and that it sometimes happens
-remembering that skin picking is your mind trying to help you by signaling that there are a few things in your life that you have to deal with
-healing antiseptic cream that helps when one has picked
-an overall good skincare routine to signal your mind that you still love your skin
-writing problems or the reason why you picked down
-acupressure ring
-spot patches for spots that you may want to pick
Hi, I have a skin picking compulsion. When severe, I experience depersonalizatiion and dissociation. This developed as a coping mechanism for me as a young child. I am wondering if anyone has ever successfully used EMDR therapy to manage this?
Omgosh, I thought I was the only one that does this! I pick at the sides of my thumbs or play with my lips and peal skin off. Sometimes I make myself bleed and so raw! After it heals, then I just do it again. Ugh!! Have done it since I was super young. Thank you for the info!!
