Exploring our anchestry

amiablePeace77 September 11th

Ancestry can influence how we perceive ourselves, which in turn affects our mental health. A strong connection to one's cultural heritage can foster a sense of belonging and self-esteem, protecting against the negative impact on mental health issues.  On the other hand, people who feel cut off from their history could be more vulnerable.

Understanding the hardships that our ancestors endured in life may alter our perception of them and increase compassion for them too. When I think about what my own father must have been through emigrating from one country where he was not safe to another one at a young age, I feel empathy for him. At that time, it was very difficult to leave the country he was living in. It changes the way I see him despite the difficult childhood I had.

Participation question

  • How would you define yourself in terms of benefits you received from your parents because of hardships they endured?
  • By exploring your ancestry, what valuable insights about yourself have you learned?

Seeking Help

Mental stress can cause us not to be able to see the good things in life and lead to excessive rumination or worries which can result in serious health problems. If you have serious, long-term problems with negative thinking and feeling depressed, see your doctor or talk to a therapist if they are related to any mental challenges.

How would you define yourself in terms of benefits you received from your parents because of hardships they endured? My dad worked very hard to provide a nice way of life. He taught me many practical skills. My mom supported my love of music and encouraged me when the going was rough.

By exploring your ancestry, what valuable insights about yourself have you learned?

I am a hard worker that is goal oriented and loves life.

@soulsings

Learning practical skills makes life much easier. Great that your dad taught you those skills and your mum supported you with music which is also very beneficial in life for many of us.

You are definitively a hard worker soul, thanks for all what you do here.

  • How would you define yourself in terms of benefits you received from your parents because of hardships they endured? I was taught to work from a young age. I had to stand on a step to do dishes. I started mowing the lawn as soon as i was able to start the mower on my own.

  • By exploring your ancestry, what valuable insights about yourself have you learned? None. My ancestors were house servants. If they were lords it would mean no more since the life of others says nothing about me.

@Gettingbettertoday

You seem to have learned to work hard from early age on!
