Daily micropractise of compassion

amiablePeace77 October 8th

Sometimes all you need is a good hug when you're feeling anxious or exhausted 💙

According to a study, a single 20-second self-compassionate touch session greatly decreased stress, enhanced participant kindness, and enhanced mental health.

The effects on mental health were greater among people who performed this micro practice daily than those who did not practice as often.

Seeking Help

Mental stress can cause us not to be able to see the good things in life and lead to excessive rumination or worries which can result in serious health problems. If you have serious, long-term problems with negative thinking and feeling depressed, see your doctor or talk to a therapist if they are related to any mental challenges.

Showing myself compassion when things are getting tough feels like a good parent would tell you "It's going to be okay, you will get through this". It makes you feel safe and hopeful again.

To be honest often people assume that the best way to help someone deal with a traumatic event or something other problem is by offering to isren so that they can talk but I think not everyone wants to talk only...sometimes we just need a hug, someone to hold out hand and say that everything will be ok.

When I went through the most major trauma of my life I guess that was what I felt...I just wanted a hug, a kind word, someone to put their hand on my shoulder or bsck and just tell me that it is ok and they are there if I nedx anything.  I did not want to talk at all at the time and found it very stressful to be asked.  In the end I just denied it happened.  I think it would have had less effect on my life if I had had someone to hug me and resasure me...

Giving you and everyone else who wants or needs as many BIG long lasting friendly hugs, hand hold outs, telling you everything’s gonna be/is ok, kind words, putting my hands on your shoulders and back, telling you it’s all ok and I’m there for you when you need anything as many times as you want/need or till you tell me “thanks for all that but don’t need anymore so you can stop I’m alright now.”

❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

And you’re 100% right. Sometimes we don’t wanna talk and just need all those other things you mentioned. I get that people push us to talk bc they care and wanna/are trying to help but for some people, just hugging, putting your hands on shoulders or back, etc is all that’s needed to help. So I totally agree with you on all this.

How could practicing more self-compassion help you with the current challenges you face?

Depends on the challenge and how much they’re affecting/impacting me. Like for example if I’m in a situation where I can’t or am having trouble sleeping, I just practice self compassion by telling myself not to worry or stress about it I’ll sleep when my entire me is ready to or I’ll think happy thoughts or visualize or imagine happy things happening or sing happy songs to sleep. If I have any other problems, I’ll just say positive motivational kind things to myself to help keep me engaged in whatever it is. And of course the biggest example of self compassion (imho) that I can give - self acceptance in every way (respect, love, etc etc etc)

@akunknown

It seems you found your ways how to apply self-compassion to different situations. I like what you mentioned about not being able to sleep "telling myself not to worry or stress about it I’ll sleep when my entire me is ready to", it prevents a lot of pressure which could keep people awake! 👍

Giving you that hug you really need now. The much needed hug will continue for as long as you need it to. Hugs are not appreciated as much as they should be. They’re such a great non verbal way of communicating with someone or giving someone what they want or need or expressing something to someone

Hugs are always welcome & returned. As for therapy - I pass. After dozens of various therapists, I stopped. When I stopped going to therapy, I got better(ish) when I did my own therapy - life, nature, meds, etc.  Just that I need to live my life, rightly/wrongly, and learn (maybe grow a bit). I experienced so much shame from therapy - all types, when all I needed was to be myself - the good, the bad and the ugly.

I am not saying not to seek out therapy, as I did learn alot (l found it like taking a psychology course on human nature, etc.). I stopped because it wasn't therapy I was seeking, but friends, inner resilience. My last therapist acknowledged my revelation.  Since then, I have not gone back to long term therapy. I still access short term for immediate concerns. However, I thank that counsellor for being in tune with what I needed all along.
