The Gratitude Project: List 3 Things That You Are Grateful For...
by LisaMeighanMScGMBPsS
Last post
November 12th
...See more Hi there, Today we will learn a little more about gratitude and learn how to express this. Studies have shown that if you practice daily gratitude practice, it can make you feel happier and improve your health. What is Gratitude? Gratitude is the expression of appreciation for what one already has and not ones future desires or hopes. It is generated from within. This social emotion strengthens relationships, and its roots run deep in evolutionary history, and it stems from the survival value of helping others and being helped in return. Studies show that specific areas of the brain are involved in experiencing and expressing gratitude. Brain scans of people assigned a task that stimulates gratitude show lasting changes in the prefrontal cortex that heighten sensitivity to future experiences of gratitude, thus feeling happier and healthier. Please list 3 things that you are grateful for and share daily if you feel comfortable to do so!

Climate change and mental health and well-being

...See more How do you feel when temperatures are very high, far higher than what you are used to, and you still need to do your daily routine? Many people feel stressed and anxious when it is too hot outside. Too much heat triggers anxiety and increases cortisol, the stress hormone and can also make people more depressed or irritable.  Extreme heat days are an inevitable consequence of a warming world, and things are not cooling down. The IPPC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change *) revealed that rapidly increasing climate change poses a rising threat to mental health and psychosocial well-being; from emotional distress such as anxiety, depression, grief, and other more serious problems. But it is not only about heat, it’s also about the increase of events caused by global warming like storms that have been of a stronger magnitude than usual. Furthermore, extreme heat also makes air quality worse by raising the risk of fires which produce smoke and by droughts that increase airborne dust particles.  Here are a few points to prepare yourself for extreme weather events: * Stay informed through local news and weather reports for warnings about extreme weather events; plan your day accordingly. * Check alerts about travel conditions before heading out in extreme weather events. * Check your home how it retains or loses heat and make alterations where possible (example black out curtains to reduce heat from the sun) * Have an adequate supply of nonperishable food in your pantry like canned goods * Have a week or more of water in storage containers * Eat healthy food to reduce your risk of chronic diseases * Create a coping tool box (collection of skills, techniques, items, and other suggestions that you can turn to when you start to feel anxious or distressed) * Have a Go Bag [https://www.pelican.com/us/en/discover/pelican-flyer/post/go-bag-checklist--what-to-pack-in-your-go-bag/] with things you may need if you have to evacuate suddenly Dealing with natural challenges requires good planning ahead, patience, acceptance, self-reflection, and mindfulness exercise [https://www.bing.com/ck/a?!&&p=2a0991cd964d94b04082c3d8651e23d43f9bab68beb6d0c8260bcadbdcd2b729JmltdHM9MTczMTgwMTYwMA&ptn=3&ver=2&hsh=4&fclid=058685c7-5112-6098-3809-9742507e619b&u=a1aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cud2lraWhvdy5oZWFsdGgvRGVhbC13aXRoLUNoYWxsZW5nZXMtTWluZGZ1bGx5&ntb=1]s. Benefits of slower eating

...See more When I was working it became normal for me to eat my meals within the shortest time. Usually it took me only a few minutes and it became a habit to have conversations about work whilst eating. I guess you can imagine that my digestion was not very good and that I hardly enjoyed the food even if it was consumed in a nice restaurant. My focus was sadly on my work. In the evening, at home, I did the same thing as at work - I ate very fast. Our health can be significantly impacted by the speed at which we consume.  Eating too quickly can result in a number of health problems. Here are some examples: * Our bodies might not register fullness, resulting in overeating * Poor digestion * Increased risk of heart disease, diabetes and stroke* * Decreased enjoyment of food At one point I felt so bad about my eating that I looked for ways to eat more slowly and something that helped me was to eat with chopsticks and later on I learned about mindful eating.  Participation questions: * Do you eat your meals quickly or do you take your time and appreciate the flavours in each bite? * What helps you to eat slower? ...See more You may have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep for a number of reasons, and these issues could arise at any time of the year. There are many problems that may prevent someone from falling and staying asleep such as worries, room temperature, caffeine and alcohol to mention just a few. However, a major issue can also be a melatonin deficiency (sleep hormone). The production of melatonin generally decreases with age but can be also influenced by too little light exposure.  Common signs of melatonin deficiency * Excessive daytime sleepiness * Nocturnal awakenings * Circadian rhythm disruptions Some research says that adding melatonin to your diet such as tart cherries or walnuts may improve sleep.  Participation question How often do you have trouble sleeping? ...See more One of the more well-known brain chemicals is dopamine. Dopamine, the so-called "happy" neurotransmitter, plays a role in motivation, mood, memory, and movement. It is important to have healthy levels of dopamine in our bodies, meaning not too high but also not too low!  High dopamine symptoms include anxiety, excessive energy, insomnia, and hallucinations. Low dopamine levels are associated with brain fog, mood swings, and muscle spasms.  Today, I would like to share with you some exercises and activities which can be helpful to maintain healthy dopamine levels. ...See more Many of us will have experienced the feeling that we know something is good for us yet our brain resists accepting it. Resistance is something we all face daily when attempting to do something important. We are hardwired to stay with what gives us comfort and because we practise staying comfortable most of the time we strengthen this default thinking. This is why the habit of delaying or avoiding important tasks (procrastination), even when we know it will harm us in the long run, is so common. Here are some ways that can help to get out of the loop of mental resistance: 1. Understand that resistance isn’t personal and affects everyone. It’s a natural part of our psychological processes, often arising when we encounter change or new ideas. 2. Body awareness. Physical sensations like muscle tensions, headaches or other symptoms of discomfort are often a sign of resistance. Be mindful of these changes in your body as they can provide valuable information about what’s happening internally. 3. Acceptance is powerful. Acknowledge that feeling uncomfortable with a new idea or situation is normal. Treat yourself particularly kindly during this time to move through the resistance with more ease.  Remember, progress often involves pushing through resistance. By practicing these steps, you’ll build resilience and find more ease in navigating life’s challenges.  Participation question How do you deal with things you find hard to accept? What does that really mean, though?  When we take the time to count our blessings, we are shifting our focus from what we lack to what we do have.  One way to begin is to keep a gratitude journal and write down what you’re thankful for each day. ...See more Have you ever noticed significant changes in your mood and behaviour when the seasons change?  Some people experience feelings of sadness, lack of energy, loss of interest in usual activities, oversleeping and even weight gain. The hourly distribution of the daylight and night time changes with seasons. Days tend to shorten during the winter and are accompanied with longer nights, which confuses the biological clock. This can trigger anxiety along with disturbed sleep schedules. Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a type of major depressive disorder (MDD) that typically occurs in people during the winter months. But SAD [https://psychcentral.com/depression/seasonal-affective-disorder] doesn’t only occur during the winter months. Summer onset SAD [https://psychcentral.com/depression/tips-to-help-summer-depression#seasonal-depression-in-summer], which occurs during the late spring and summer months, may also relate to the sun and chemical changes in your brain.  Participation question How do you feel when the seasons change? Exploring our anchestry

...See more Ancestry can influence how we perceive ourselves, which in turn affects our mental health. A strong connection to one's cultural heritage can foster a sense of belonging and self-esteem, protecting against the negative impact on mental health issues.  On the other hand, people who feel cut off from their history could be more vulnerable. Understanding the hardships that our ancestors endured in life may alter our perception of them and increase compassion for them too. When I think about what my own father must have been through emigrating from one country where he was not safe to another one at a young age, I feel empathy for him. At that time, it was very difficult to leave the country he was living in. It changes the way I see him despite the difficult childhood I had.  Participation question * How would you define yourself in terms of benefits you received from your parents because of hardships they endured? * By exploring your ancestry, what valuable insights about yourself have you learned?
