Studying Productivity

rainyLove17 January 28th, 2015

What do you do while studying to maintain productivity? Listen to music? Sit alone? Sit in a loud environment? What do you listen to if its music? Do you have a specific playlist?

I listen to music! Usually I like to listen to more slow or relaxing music when I study though as opposed to the upbeat music I usually listen to. When studying I'll listen to some folk or maybe even classical and I find that I can concentrate a lot better.

I have to study in my own regular space, away from other people. Quiet, with only music on low volume if I'm playing it. If there are others making noise around me, I put in earplugs or noise-cancelling earphones.

No specific playlists--as long as you play something you enjoy then it gets easier to enjoy studying. (Fun fact: studies have shown that if you play the same music you studied with during a test, your performance is going to be higher. Too bad they don't let you take a test with earphones!)

I make sure to have enough energy, at least with a snack or glass of water nearby. Ido stretching exercisesor takea short walk sometimes as a break, so I get some activity even if it's not dedicated exercise.I am aware of trying not to goon the internet so much as a break (and go on a walk or get a drinkinstead), since it's so easy to be sucked in websurfing and suchandjust procrastinate. Jumping jacks + a change in whatever music you are playingif good for if you find yourself becoming listless.

Comfort is the biggest deal for me. I study at home, in my pajamas. I have all my things ready for various sensory/disability related needs.

If I have time, I try to expand my studying to include more interesting topics (that are still relevant to what I -have- to study) so that my studying is more enjoyable, and therefore easier to keep up with at a consistent pace.

I like to listen to classical piano music while I study. It's soothing and since there are no words its easier to focus. I recommend searching 'study playlists piano' on youtube, or I have a lot of Ludovico Einaudiand George Winston on my itunes.

As for study space, I do well when I'm by myself, facing a wall. I am easily distracted, so I don't do well sitting across from people, especially if they're moving around. I have a desk in my room which I dedicated only to studying so as to not have other types of junk on there.

My last recommendation is to take study breaks! We're only human. Listen to one of your favorite songs, get up and stretch, get a snack, talk to a friend etc. About 5-10 minutes if you're studying for a short period of time, but if I'm studying all day sometimes my breaks go for 20 mins so I can get back to it refreshed.

Good luck!

Good luck with studying, first of all.

Secondly, a lot of tips often given, like classical music and snack breaks, don't actually work well for me, so just in case you, like me, are not the kind that is helped by cleaning your desk or piano music, I'll share my own tips.

I use 4-5 highlighters of different colours, and for example, decide that I will highlight important names with green, important theories with blue, etc. That way I can revise swiftly, and spot the things I'm looking for easily, and have a general idea of how much there is to know ("there are four theories I must remember from chapter 6").

I also often take notes. I try to condense my textbooks into 15-20 pages of personal scribbles, not always for future use, but because the writing process itself helps me memorize.

Sometimes I am also helped by telling other people about the things I am trying to understand or remember, so I end up studying with a friend, or in my father's office, so I can occasionally just rant out loud about a specific subject I am trying to master.

Something that is commonly advised and that does work for me, is also a change in environment; grabbing my books, my case files, my highlighters, and heading off to a public place, like a quiet cafe or a library, where I will not have access to a laptop or a TV, and where my dignity alone might force me to make myself studious.

However, pushing yourself too hard if it just doesn't seem like you are in the right state of mind to study is not good, either. Sometimes you might be incapable of performingacademically for reasons like a mental illness, grief, side-effects of medication, an addiction, etc, and in these cases the priority is dealing with the source of the pain and blockage, not trying to force yourself to study.

I hope you will be alright!

For me comfort is everything. Having everything you need in a close distance, from markers to tea and from comfy clothes to heating/breeze. I have also discovered a lot of motivational videos on youtube (which is mostly for sports, but it still makes you want to succeed) and I have turned them into mp3 files and I listen to them before I start studying and whenever I feel like I am too tired or want to give up. Hope this helps!

Exactly! I also make sure I have my chargers too so I don't have to get them everytimemy laptop/phone is about to run out of battery. I prefer that way of studying soooo much more than just sittingin front of my desk on a hard chair. I'd recommend it to everyone out there

I always make sure that I'm comfortable! I love to just sit in my bed with all my books around me and do my homework. I also listen to music while I'mstudying and I usually just use some good playlists from Spotify! And when I have to study (which is like everyday) I like to talk out loud while studying. It really helps me to remember everything and to keep focussed.

Oh my...we study the same way, indeed! I also talk to myself, usually in a british accent to make theories sound so more sophisticated! Be my study buddy, yes? :)

I'm so, so, bad at being distracted by the internet. Ten minutes into studying for an exam and "Oh!" nows a good time to check pinterest or facebook. So to make sure I actually get some work done, I downloaded an apple app called "Selfcontrol" when you set a time limit where you are blocked off from your tempting sites. It sounds really stupid, but it has been a lifesaver for me becauseit literally will not let you on those sites until the time runs out.

I get distracted super easily so study groups help me a lot! Before major tests I usually get together with at least one other person and we test each other on all the material and explain things to each other if one of us doesn't understand! I also like to keep my notes super organized and color coded. This helps when making flash cards because writing things over helps me remember them and I can use the flash cards anywhere. Also making up stupid little stories with the material help me remember them when I see them on tests!

I try to study a little bit each day. Even if its just for 10 minutes. That way, when the big test comes I don't have to worry too much as I already got it in my head. But I usually study well in a library. Alone though. I just like seeing other people study and knowing I'm not alone in this. I also listen to cultural folk, or straight up Mozart. There's a 6 hour playlist on YouTube I like to listen to. All the best in your studying.
