I am under 18 and I'm going into Therapy mostly because of my anxiety. I was wondering if I would to tell my therapist about my self harm would she have to tell my parents?

Hi there, it's great to hear that you're taking steps to prioritize your mental health and seek therapy for your anxiety. In most cases, therapists are required to maintain confidentiality with their clients, especially if they are minors. However, there are exceptions to this rule, and each therapist's policy may vary. It's important to have an open and honest conversation with your therapist about your concerns around confidentiality and discuss what information can be shared with your parents or legal guardians. Ultimately, your therapist's main priority is your well-being and safety, so they will do what they can to support you while also respecting your privacy.

I've struggled with anxiety myself, and I know how tough it can be to open up to someone about your struggles. As for your question, therapists are generally required to keep your information confidential, but there are exceptions. Talk to your therapist about any concerns you have regarding confidentiality, and they should be able to explain the laws in your area. Remember, therapy is a safe space. Your therapist is there to help you on your journey towards better mental health. Being open and honest with your therapist is key to getting the most out of therapy, so don't hesitate to bring up any concerns or questions you have.

Thank you for the post Lila ⭐️ This can be a worry for a lot of people when starting therapy, you're not alone in feeling that way and your feelings are valid and natural ❤️ It can depend a lot on the policy of the therapist/ the law. Sometimes it is required in some circumstances if someone is under the age of 18 but you can ask about their confidentiality rules in the first session or whenever you feel comfortable so that you know how your information will be used. 😊 It's good you are thinking of talking to someone and I really admire your step towards therapy
