"Having sex in a post-AIDS world" [Truvada]

Barush August 21st, 2014

I've stumbled upon an excerpt from aninterview on the SiriusXM radio calledHaving sex in a post-AIDS world. It has just a bit over three minutes, if anyone wants to listen to it.

Recently, a drug called Truvada was approved forpre-exposure prophylaxisagainst HIV infection. What that means is that the drug can reducethe risk of getting the HIV-1 infection (transmitted during sexual intercourse) when used together with safer sex practices. It is to be used only by adult individuals at a high risk of contracting HIV-1. Those are HIV-negative men who have sex with other men, and male-female sex partners, where one of those has HIV-1 and the other does not.

Here'sa couple quotations from the discussion linked above:

"Everybody in this room doesn't remember sex before HIV. Our sex lives hadbeen haunted by death."

"What I like about Truvadais that it reminds me every day of what could happen as a result of my behaviour."

"A study showed that among people who were given Truvada, there was no increase of risky behaviour."

Questions, if you feel like answering them:

Have you ever heard about this drug before?

What do you think about this way of preventing HIV infections?

This drug is for HIV negative people who are at high risk of contracting it. It's supposed to be preventative in a sense that when they're in direct contact with the virus, chances of contracting it should be considerably lower. @Suri

It wouldnt let me hear the ad but I have to say that I do not like the idea of them promoting this as the beginning of an 'post aids' world. That is simply unrealistic.

I have hiv/aids and truvada is actually 2 drugs combined .. (truvada = viread+ emtriva) I was taking both meds separatelyfor easier dosing. Viread is very hard on the kidneys and I have recently been taken off of it for that reason.

I think it's great to have this as an option in the right cases but feel that it is a very dangerous game to promote this as leading us into a 'post aids era' when there are still countries where aids medications are still not accessible and misinformation is still rampant.

Hey, @JilliansListening! Thanks so much for your comment and insight! Pity you couldn't hear the conversation, maybe it was taken down? Dunno. Anyways, I used the same title as the other website did, but I think it can be quite misleading without the context. What they meant by "post-AIDS" world is a world where HIV/AIDS is known and isn't going away. So they didn't mean it's not an issue anymore, quite the opposite. They were talking about a world in which they can't have sex without HIV/AIDS being on their minds constantly. I hope that clarifies it a bit. (I'll try to see if I can find the audio anywhere else).

Thank you for making me and others more aware with your comment. Truvada is great for so many affected individuals and it makes their love lives possible but we must also continue to be skeptical about these things. I previously hadn't even thought about any side effects such as kidney harm.

I work with HIV/AIDS and I gave an interview at CTV in Toronto in 2011, when Truvada was first launched in North America. Nowadays we call this kind of profilaxy"PRep". I think it's important to give all the credit to PRep therapies, mainly when it comes to serodiscondantscouples. Its efiacy is indeed amazing and a huge step against AIDS. However, it is also important to understand that it is not a vaccinagainst HIV infection and we all have to practice safe sex.
