Sharing Part of Upcoming Book
Hello all! I just wanted to share a small piece of a book I'm writing. I hope you enjoy! Oh, and all feedback is highly welcomed. I won't improve without criticism!
**Trigger Warning: mention of family turmoil and violence.**
"One hot summer's day after I had graduated 1st grade, as heat waves were visibly radiating, the scorching sun stood high in the sky shining brighter than ever. I woke up with an achy chest and a sharp headache. I had finished the 1st grade having scored the highest in my school that year; it was two weeks after school had ended. My chest ache stemmed from my sleeping on the ceramic floor but it did not concern me much, as I was accustomed to it. The unbearable heat dried out the liquids in my body, making my lips chapped and faded. I heard Father's laughter. He was with Mother and my siblings, making vulgar jokes and telling stories from his days as a soldier. I had to go past the room my family sat in to get to the kitchen and I did not want to be seen by them, since I knew they would invite me to sit there too. Despite my best effort to be inconspicuous, I ended up sitting next to Father upon his demand and was subjected to his untasteful jokes. I was visibly irritated, for my physical ailments prevented me from acting interested. I could feel my fatherโs gaze burn at me so I glanced over at him and time slowed down. I could count every visible speck of dust shining with the sunlight coming from the window behind him. Everything was almost fixed in place. I felt each contracting and constricting muscle fibre trying to make my body lunge backwards. I thought it quite odd and fascinating. I had not ordered my muscles to push me back. My body worked on its own at full capacity. I did not want that moment to ever end. I felt like I had enough strength to bear the weight of mountains. But then I came to realise time had slowed since a knife was darting towards my stomach."
