March 6 - 12th: Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month!

QuickJazz March 6th, 2017

Its week two of Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month!

This month is to raise awareness about the inclusion of people with developmental disabilities in all facets of community life, as well as awareness to the barriers that people with disabilities still sometimes face in connecting to the communities in which they live, by sharing experiences. [Source].

This year's theme: Side by Side ... to highlight the many ways in which people with and without developmental disabilities come together to form strong, diverse communities. [Source].

So what are developmental disabilities?

Developmental disabilities refer to a diverse group of chronic conditions that are mental or physical in nature. They may be physical (e.g., spina bifida), they may affect mental ability (e.g., learning disabilities), or they may also be both (e.g., Down syndrome). This can result in different experiences and challenges regarding certain areas of life, particularly in language, mobility, learning, self-help, and independent living.

More examples include: ADHD / ADD, autism, Asperger's syndrome, cerebral palsy, intellectual disability and muscular dystrophies.

In honour of this observance, we will be highlight supportive parts of the website for those with disabilities. This includes having a variety of discussions held throughout the month related to both disability (as well as chronic illness/pain) and developmental disabilities. Each week, we will post a list of helpful spaces and discussions taking place around 7 Cups!

See posts below to find out whats happening on 7 Cups to start us off between March 6 - 12th!

Hope you will be able to join us in our activities this month!
