I am brave because I wake up everyday even though I don't want to.

@ashgable

You won't always feel like you don't want to wake up. I don't think anyone feels like that every single day of their lives. In order to get to the next week, month, or year, we occasionally have to have good days. So, if you can be open to the possibility that tomorrow you might want to wake up and see the sun shine or have some other tiny pleasure in something, you will be on your way to expecting some good stuff in your life. I know this is very hard to do when you feel so depressed (I've been there, extremely recently). But, sometimes doing hard things makes us feel a little braver, a little more willing to try because some little thing made us feel good for a moment. Then you build day by day, some good stuff in your life, and before too long you start feeling better. The good little things are just that, little pleasures, like a cup of tea, sun shining on your face, a call to a friend, a movie. Anything. Embrace your bravery as one of those good things. It is like giving yourself a high-five for showing up!

I am brave because I stayed truth to myself, despite my parents disapproving with my life choices.

I wanted to major in English but my dad said no. I just got my diploma (majoring in English Education) in the mail yesterday :D.

@lovelife93

It is brave for you to do what you want to do versus what your parents want. Congratulations on finishing your degree---the degree you wanted! It is your life and your career, and you are the best determiner of what is right for you. I spent a year in community college majoring in computers because my mother thought was the way for me to go. I did fine, making the dean's list, but it didn't make me happy. I went on to major in what I wanted---psychology, and then went to grad school for counseling. So, good for you!

I am brave because I found the courage to find help with my mental illness.

@dxplicit

That is brave! Congratulations! Nothing changes until something changes. It takes bravery to confront mental illness head on, because our society stigmatizes people so much for this. What they fail to realize is that in marginalizing people this way who suffer with emotional issues, it makes it far tougher for them to get help, and then by the time they do, things are often much worse and more steps have to be taken to get things under control. It costs everyone in some way. It costs our society plenty. I hope the help you are getting is top-notch!

@struggler64 Thank you for your kind words. I do agree with you that our society creates a social barrier towards mental illness and in-turn the people who do need the support are then left to struggle with the disease themselves - it is quite unfortunate. I hope I'll be able to stay on this path and in the near future be able to help others as well.

I actively choose to turn over every possible stone when it comes to my healing, even when I'm aware it will probably be very painful. I choose awareness over denial every time, in order to get to the other side of things for a better life. While I can be quite self-destructive in the midst of a huge pain cycle, when push comes to shove, I end up choosing life-affirming things.
