Dog barks anyways

When the sun rises each day, spilling its soft yellows and blues,
The dog’s teeth flash, barking through
Iron-wrought gates that keep us apart—
A reminder of what we can never touch.

I stand at the fence, feeling the splinters dig into my skin,
Sitting on the edge, heart in my throat,
Wanting to jump, to fall, to know you’d catch me,
But the world keeps us running in circles, never meeting.

I wait for the moment when the air between us will break,
When the weight of silence won't hold us down,
But all I hear is the dog’s relentless cry,
And the space between us grows, a spark who's died

When the sun rises each day, spilling its soft yellows and blues

I stand at the fence, feeling the splinters dig into my skin

I wait for the moment when the air between us will break

@twerp

A very nicely written poem. It feels jagged and strained, and the imagery is very effective.

I liked it, and hope you will show us all more of your poems.

@twerp The way you describe the fence and the splinters makes it feel like more than just a physical barrier — it’s almost like the pain of wanting something that’s always out of reach. The dog’s bark, relentless and sharp, adds a kind of raw urgency to the whole piece, almost as if it’s echoing your frustration. It’s not just a waiting game, it’s a constant, painful push and pull. Very striking.
