Questions for diagnosed/suspected like individuals

AllAroundMe October 1st, 2021

Hello.

I am currently seeking individuals like myself, that have either been forthcoming with a professional of their own accord or “caught” and pressured to by someone else.

I want to specifically mention that I am and always have been non-violent and have no real desire of physically harming others. With that being said, I believe that I would be found relatively high on the sliding scale of psychopathy.

I had a slip up and was “caught” by my current romantic partner who is now strongly pressing me to begin seeing a therapist. I had no out, and agreed to seek out anonymous therapy with a professional specializing in this neck of the ASPD woods with no success. As a result, I am VERY cautiously approaching the idea of traditional therapy without anonymity. I have several concerns that I can’t ignore and would like to know the experience of others like myself.

@AllAroundMe

Hi, welcome to 7 Cups. 💜 The ASPD subforum doesn't receive a lot of activity, so I'm tagging some people who have been active in this forum in the past few months and might possibly have relevant insights or experiences.

I was able to find a couple Reddit threads where some people who have either suspected that they have ASPD or who have been diagnosed with ASPD have discussed some of their experiences/attitudes regarding therapy.

I found a meta-analysis looking at the effectiveness of different psychological interventions for ASPD, and there is some limited evidence for schema therapy and dialectical behavior therapy being helpful for some people.

This thread lists a few emerging therapeutic modalities for ASPD:

My psychologist said people like me do not change from therapy. I went to psychotherapy sessions because I wanted to do something fun, and it was, but in terms of “changing” then there is no point because I don’t see anything wrong with what I do or how I think. I enjoyed arguing with my psychologist about why the dog eat dog mentally is justified in places such as the political arena, but I ended sessions after the third visit because I had other things to spend money on. Usually, people with ASPD go to therapy in situations exactly like yours—by recommendation from close acquaintances. I’d do it just to get them off my back, or I’d just leave them entirely.

@Kapto

Hi, that makes sense what you're describing that you weren't expecting or hoping anything to necessarily change in therapy, since you feel fine with who you are. So it was just more of a fun/interesting thing to do and a way of getting people around you to stop bothering you. Can also definitely agree that there are certain situations where using whatever power/strength you have and being merciless yields good results.

I relate to this a lot, I didn't know there was a specific type of person like me-

@AllAroundMe I totally agree with your opinion on this... I have reservations about going , and I too have a very similar circumstance.
