Went to the storage unit to look for three things: a book my father gave me that was antique, my grandmother memoirs and a painting that my mother gave me. Ended up with a carload of books and candles and knickknacks and tons of vases and glassware. Going the wrong direction

Does anyone here have experience with hoarding? Over the past 15 years I’ve destroyed my home by never getting rid of anything and buying excess stuff. I want to dig out of this but I’m depressed and lie in bed sleeping a lot. My family seems not bothered by the state of the house. I don’t know what to do
Hoarding Disorder Treatment

Treatment of Hoarding Disorder can be challenging because many people don't recognize the negative impact of hoarding on their lives or don't believe they need treatment. This is especially true if the possessions— such as stuffed animals or photographs—offer comfort. If they are taken away, people will often react with frustration and anger and quickly collect more to help fulfil emotional needs.
Psychotherapy, also called talk therapy, is the primary treatment. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is one of the main forms of psychotherapy used to treat hoarding disorder. Apart from CBT which is used quite frequently, medications may be added, particularly if you also have co-occuring conditions like anxiety or depression. Remember to try and find a therapist/mental health professional with experience in treating Hoarding Disorder.
For children with hoarding disorder, it's important to have the parents involved in treatment. Sometimes called "family accommodation," over the years, some parents may think that allowing their child to get and save countless items may help lower their child's anxiety. Actually it may do the opposite, increasing anxiety. In addition to therapy for the child, parents need professional guidance to learn how to respond to and help manage their child's hoarding behavior.

So we've explored what Hoarding Disorder is [https://www.7cups.com/forum/SupportPlus_205/HoardingSupport_1098/HoardingDisorderAnIntroduction_254157/], but what causes it? As with any neurospychiatric condition, there is usually some contribution of nature (biology), and nurture (environmental factors). This could include genetics—often many different genes contribute tiny amounts to developing a condition—differences in brain functioning (including in brain development, brain lesions, the impact of stroke/surgery/brain injury/ infection; imbalances in chemical messengers called neurotransmitters), and stressful life events according to an article by Mayo Clinic and MedicineNet. There isn't usually a single cause and researchers are still trying to narrow down what potential causal factors could be.
Moreover, the article suggests that Hoarding usually starts when you're in your pre-teen to teenage years—between 11-15 years old—and this trajectory worsens as you grown older. It is more frequently seen in older adults which suggests age is a risk factor: you're more likely to have it if you're older but age itself doesn't "cause" you to develop it.
Other risk factors include having: (a) trouble making decisions, (b) family members with Hoarding Disorder or other neuropsychiatric conditions, and (c) difficult experiences like the early childhood deprivation, trauma, the death of someone important to you/ losing your home/marital issues, etc.
What do you think about the causes of Hoarding Disorder? Do you have any thoughts about it?

Hoarding Disorder: An Introduction

Hoarding Disorder is a Mental Health Condition which—like BDD, BFRBs, and OCD—is categorised in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders Version 5 (DSM-V; American Psychiatric Association, 2013) under the category OCD and related conditions.

You might have a relative or family member who you believe is a "hoarder" but (a) nobody should be labelled that way, and (b) it is only diagnosed if it causes significant distress and dysfunction. It's not just about having too many things... the extent of hoarding behaviour is such that a person is unable to use their living or work spaces.
Those struggling with Hoarding Disorder essentially stock up on objects that might be perceived as holding no value, but these people struggle intensely with letting go of belongings. This is because (a) they might believe that they need these things they're hoarding or (b) they experience extreme discomfort/anxiety if they try to throw away objects.
According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, some other symptoms include:
1. Challenges with classifying and organising one's belongings
2. Problems deciding what they should hold on to and how to store objects
3. Fears that others will touch their items which they treasure deerly
4. Feeling embarassed or like everything is too much with reference to their belongings.
5. Recurrent obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviours: e.g. worries that one won't have enough of an item/that one shouldn't let go of something.
6. Impact on various domains of one's life: financial stress, health risks, social withdrawal, disrupted relationships with others.
What has your experience of Hoarding been like? Is there anything you think people without Hoarding Disorder should know?

Messy, Collector or Hoarding Disorder?

Hi Everyone,
Do you feel your living space is cluttered with stuff and wondering if it is a hoarding disorder? Let's check out and feel free to add more information on the comment below ♡
Someone can be very messy, but as soon as they have motivation and time or have someone help, they have no issue throwing away stuff that is considered as thrash or invaluable and clearing the clutter.
Someone is a collector when they display their stuff proudly for their own satisfaction and or for others to see
Someone is a hoarder when it involves the acquisition of a large number of possessions that clutter the living area of the person collecting them.
It becomes a disorder when the behavior negatively affects the quality of life, disturbing the comfort of their living space, yet the person is having difficulty discarding the hoarded stuff or even becoming upset if someone tries to clear the clutter, which leads to significant distress.
Questions:
❍ Is there more information about hoarding you would like to add?
❍ What is the motivation behind hoarding behaviour?
❍ What is the 'fear' behind difficulty to discard hoarded stuff despite the discomfort and stress it causes?
❍ What do you think would be the first small step to do for someone suffering hoarding disorder to overcome it?

Loved ones affected by the hoarder

Hi!
One of the main reasons of me wanting to move out so badly is my dad's hoarding problem. It got to the point where it's really out of control. And it's so hard like I can't handle living in such conditions anymore. It makes me feel really trapped in my own home. And my dad refuses to get any kind of help including seeing professional which we suggested many times, he isn't able to see his problem, he just straight up ignores when we try to talk to him about it. He gets very angry and he starts shouting and stuff when we get rid of some of his things. Another thing is that he lost track of what he owns and where he stores it and he's very irritated when he's unable to find something he's looking for, he starts blaming and accuse us for that and he gets paranoid about it sometimes. During quarantine I started to see how little of actual space and privacy I have for myself and it affected my ability to preform good in school. And it's just not acceptable I shouldn't have to deal with this, I deserve to live in clean organized environment, it's making the symptoms of my depression way worse. I have been trying to be patient about it but enough is enough, he has been like this for my whole life and I have my own things to focus on. I'm just scared of leaving my mom behind once I'll move out when starting college in less than 2 years. Both my brothers want to leave this house as much as I do and they have plans.
Hoarder contradiction

Due to my depression, my whole life I have donated or thre away all the good stuff. Gave away all my collections, threw away valuable pieces in anger....all my books, my butterflies, my coins, my stamps, my knives, my vynils etc. , everything of value and worth I did not sell but gave away or threw away, not a single dime...
Yet in my latest stages of depression since 2007 I find myself another type of "hoarder", that they politely call hoarder but just hoarding trash to the point that the ved in covered in food trash the room is covered in mountains of trash, nothing gets done, noone can come in...till today I manage at some points to mobilise and spend time throwing out trash and cleaning up...not much longer...my mind, not my body fails me...
I saw on TV a nice lady helping her neighbour who was eldrrly and very thin and though she looked presentable she avoided going out often and never received anyone in her home...she was a major depressive garbage hoarder like me, on her bed, everywhere, so the neighbour lady offered to clean the house for her...it was soooo sad, unwashed clothes, near good makep, good foodtogether with trash, total chaos and sad, very tearful sad state of things...I felt for that petite elderly woman and the neighbour who could identify and hep her out and be supportive and adoptive...she saved her...

Hello!
Where would I suggest or maybe find a community for hoarders? I have a hoarding problem and would like to know if there are others, and if there is support. Maybe I'm asking in the wrong place?

I suppose whenever I must throw away or donate an item I feel very sad and like I shouldn't have done that... especially when it comes to throwing away. I feel like it's a waste of the item and like I shouldn't have given up on it. I'm not certain why and I would really like to stop viewing things this way.
