For me personally it means that this is how I know whether it's worth to trust a person or not, by the way they react towards me opening up.Either they come forward to me, meaning - they expand when I tell them about me and my story, either they don't do so - meaning they contract.On the other hand, I'm not the author of the quote so I can't provide the exact meaning of it, I can only give my interpretation of it.I hope that I explained it in a way that you can understand what I tried to say and thanks for asking the question!:)
