unsupportive workplace

reesesland January 3rd, 2021

i was recently hired on as a temp at a big department store after a friend who works there told me they would hire anyone she recommended. i also changed my name and started using they/them pronouns a few months ago, so this was my first job using that name. the training videos i watched said the company was all about inclusion of race, gender, sexuality, religion, disability etc. however, my friend told me her experiences with racist and homophobic workers. she has reported them many times to management, but the most that happens is she isn't allowed to work with them anymore. for my own safety, i haven't told any coworkers about my dead name or pronouns. although, a manager has seen my id because she was confirming identity to put me in the system. this manager now relentlessly uses my dead name to make fun of me. some of my coworkers do look at me funny because i don't follow gender norms with my style. i am worried they are hiring me on as a part time associate. i can't be in an environment like that anymore. i feel disrespected everyday. i even have panic attacks that have caused me to call into work out of sheer fear and exhaustion. i appreciate my friend getting me a job, but i also feel bad for her having to deal with all of that. if anyone has some good, inclusive places to work, i'm all ears!

Hello @reesesland

I am so sorry you are going through this. You deserve to be respected and valued. You are a good person and there is nothing wrong with being trans. I wish your coworkers could see this <3 While I have never gone through something like this before, I do have some resources for facing workplace discrimination. You can view them by clicking here. I hope this helps <3
