Hello everyone,
Welcome back to the second discussion of the course!
John C Maxwell defines leadership as, a leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.
Effective Leadership starts with utilizing skills to guide your team. There are different research and studies that show that to be a good leader, one would require a blend of some key skills like communication, problem-solving, decision making, conflict resolution, clear vision, integrity, emotional intelligence, listening, empathy, adaptability, resilience, etc.
Behavioral Theories believe that people can become leaders through the process of teaching, learning, and observation. Leadership is a set of skills that can be learned by training, perception, practice, and experience over time. Leadership learning is a lifetime activity.
Everyone holds his fortune in his own hands, like a sculptor the raw material he will fashion into a figure. But it is the same with that type of artistic activity as with all others: we are merely born with the capability to do it. The skill to mold the material into what we want must be learned and attentively cultivated. -- J.W.V. Goethe
The same is true with leadership. You may or may not have all the required ingredients of becoming an effective leader. And, thats totally okay. You can acquire them by learning. Taking small steps every day. That is how one learns, practices, and masters skills.
Next step, below in the comments of this discussion, share
1. Are leaders born or made?
2. Identify 3 skills that you need to work upon?
3. Imagine, you are a project lead and there is a conflict among your team members over responsibility share. As a leader, how will you approach the situation to resolve the concern?
4. Please reply to 3 of your peers in the thread!
After fulfilling the requirements of this post, please check out the next post here! You must take part in the brainstorming/activities given in all of these posts to successfully complete the program.
This post is brought to you by the Leadership Development Program Team, find out more information about the program here.
1. Are leaders born or made? Made! :D
2. Identify 3 skills that you need to work upon? My impatience, my penchant for always going against the rules (not in a bad way, but you know, rules are put in place for a reason), and my ambitious nature (which isn't so bad, unless it becomes really ungrounded).
3. Imagine, you are a project lead and there is a conflict among your team members over responsibility share. As a leader, how will you approach the situation to resolve the concern? I will explain what their roles are in the project and then discuss why it's integral to the overall delivery of the results. Then, I will ask them what their issue is with regard to the responsibility share. If I deem it fair, I'll explain further and invite more questions for them to understand. If I see a misalignment and it needs to be tweaked, I will ask for options and input mine, then decide from there, with compromise from the team members.
I find it very interesting about leaders, the division between whether people believe leaders are born or made, everyone is born the same, we may be different in some ways but I generally believe leadership skills are learned and the pathway to learning depends on the person, any barriers they may have and how they overcome those barriers.
You raise interesting points and an interesting whilst useful path forward that can be person centred.
@iCareUK thank you! I am happy to read your comments and feel honoured for your interaction <3 I learn from your posts, too! :D
@CosmicMiracle great approach!!
@Heather225
1. Are leaders born or made?
Leaders are made because they can develop the skills to become a good leader over time.
2. Identify 3 skills that you need to work upon?
1) Communication: Communication is key and I can further develop this skill in how I communicate with others better
2) Control under pressure: I tend to get stressed easily under a lot of pressure
3) Patience: Sometimes I can get impatient with others and I can definitely work on that
3. Imagine, you are a project lead and there is a conflict among your team members over responsibility share. As a leader, how will you approach the situation to resolve the concern?
As a leader, I would sit down with each of the members individually first and talk with them to identify the problem and how they can each compromise and share the responsibilities with each other.
@Heather225
1. Are leaders born or made?
I am made leader, as no one is born perfectly in order to hold position of leadership in first stage, we learn to be.
2. Identify 3 skills that you need to work upon?
>Interpersonal skills as I am not much good in it to work directly with members, still probably need to work with colleagues and mentors, making interpersonal skills important.
>Self-management skills are skills as I sometimes tend to lose track with personal and professional life I need to manage my time and be as productive as possible within the workplace.
>Computer skills as I sometimes struggle to understand in-depth knowledge of computer. I would like to applying for requires more advanced computer skills, be sure to highlight these on my resume as well if I possess them
3. Imagine, you are a project lead and there is a conflict among your team members over responsibility share. As a leader, how will you approach the situation to resolve the concern?
As a leader, I would approach the situation to resolve the concern by problem solving in communication where everyone’s concerns and points of view are freely expressed.BE open-minded to make the organization and the people it serves better and be comfortable with problem solving always know how to gather the right people, resources, budget and knowledge from past experiences.
4. Please reply to 3 of your peers in the thread!

@iStarlight
I really liked how you would handle the situation.
@Heather225
Hello everyone,
#1: I believe that you are born with the thought of becoming a leader & then over time & practice you shape the mold.
#2: I would want to work on my communication, time management & work-life balance skills.
#3: Very good question, I would first identify how they feel this way & how they are feeling about the responsibility share. I would ask them what they would like to see changed & why they would like to see that change. I would then make a decision based on their feedback, if that is more or less work.
