My journey of critical thinking

Renjik8013 May 25th

Hello, everyone in the IDG community, and it's lovely to read everyone's posts ❤️

I found the course interesting and learned so much from it. Of the five domains discussed in the course, critical thinking is one of the skills that sticks out to me the most. I've heard the word "critical thinking" since my first year of college because it seems to be a central theme of my major. I've never realised that such a skill could also be a big part of our everyday lives since then.

Throughout the course, I've noticed that such skills could help in daily decision-making processes and, most importantly, long-term goal orientation and visioning, which I believe is one of the essential components. As a person who's always self-judging, I believe developing critical thinking can help weigh the pros and cons of options in choosing the best course of action, which is important in various situations.

The tips provided in the course are also extraordinarily valuable, and I aim to practice my critical thinking more.

  • Exploring more literature regarding critical thinking, not just those required by my study.
  • Set long-term and achievable goals
  • Listen to different people's perspectives

  1. What are some strategies you use to enhance your critical thinking skills in your personal or professional life?
  2. Can you share an instance where critical thinking helped you navigate a complex situation? How did it change the outcome?

@Renjik8013 Hello Renjik!

Critical thinking is one of the most important skills in today's world, where we are continuously bombarded with information. If you are not critically evaluating what you read or what someone tells you, you haven't fully educated yourself, and this can harm you.

One way I enhance my critical thinking skills is by reading books from various sources to understand different perspectives. So, I can better analyze and question the information I discover and make more informed and balanced conclusions.

@Renjik8013 Yes, I agree with you, critical thinking is indeed very important in our daily life. This term is frequently mentioned when getting into the university especially when writing essays. Thinking critically is fun and here's an example I met recently when I was writing my essay: I had never critically thought about the pros and cons of 'inclusive education' as I believed it was purely a good thing before doing all the research. However, after doing all the research, I surprisingly found out there are many scholars propose objections to it as they think it is actually a way to lower the disability person's self-esteem and left negative impact to their psychological states. It is an interesting finding that is due to critical thinking.

@Renjik8013 Meditation, It helped me look back on an interaction, which let me gain the insight to change my mind, stopping me from making a bad decision.

1. I like to consider the biases and intentions of the creators of different pieces of media or news, and I do more research to verify whether they're telling the truth.

2. I was in a kind of toxic relationship where the other person was telling me I was being selfish and ungrateful, but when I thought critically about it I realized he didn't actually have any evidence or examples of me actually doing that. I ended up distancing myself from him because I realized he was trying to manipulate me, and instead of reacting to his accusations I recognized they just weren't true.
