...See more Hobbies Help Our Mental Health! Mental health and self-care are intricately linked, and engaging in hobbies can be a powerful tool to support both.  Hobbies are very personal. Each of us likes and chooses something different for our hobbies, and the choice we make can however affect our mental health. Some hobbies can actually raise our stress and frustration levels, especially worrying about getting something right. The painter that can’t capture the painting they want, or the musician that needs to practice for hours every day. So choosing the right hobby for the right time can help to improve our mental health. Having a mix of relaxing and energetic, mindful and chaotic can all help to ease the stresses and pressures of our lives.  Here are a few hobbies known to benefit mental health:-: * Art Therapy: Engaging in artistic activities such as drawing, painting, or sculpting can promote relaxation and self-expression, which are beneficial for managing stress and improving mood. A study published in the Journal of the American Art Therapy Association found that art therapy can reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression. At 7 Cups we have a dedicated Arts & Crafts Community Here * Gardening: Spending time outdoors and caring for plants has been shown to reduce stress and improve overall well-being. Research published in the Journal of Health Psychology suggests that gardening can promote mood enhancement and stress reduction. Gardening is a topic in Hobby Zone so please post Here * Music Therapy: Listening to or creating music can have a profound impact on mental health by reducing stress, promoting relaxation, and enhancing emotional expression. A systematic review published in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews concluded that music therapy can effectively reduce symptoms of depression. Music and Dance Community Here [https://www.7cups.com/forum/music/]  * Physical Exercise: Engaging in physical activities such as walking, running, or yoga can improve both physical and mental health. Regular exercise has been shown to reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression. We have a Sports & Fitness topic Here * Reading & Writing: Immersing oneself in a good book can provide an escape from everyday stressors and promote relaxation. Research published in the Journal of Clinical Psychology found that reading can be an effective form of stress relief, leading to decreased levels of cortisol, the stress hormone. Reading and Writing Community is Here * Cooking and Baking: Cooking or baking can be a creative outlet that allows individuals to express themselves while also providing a sense of accomplishment. Research has shown that engaging in cooking-related activities can improve mood and increase feelings of happiness. Share your recipes Here [https://www.7cups.com/forum/hobbyzone/FoodRecipestoShare_2652/] or share cooking tips Here  [https://www.7cups.com/forum/hobbyzone/Foodallaboutfood_1139/] * Outdoor Activities: Spending time outdoors and engaging in activities such as hiking, camping, or birdwatching can promote feelings of connection to nature and provide opportunities for physical activity and relaxation. Research suggests that spending time in natural environments can reduce stress and improve cognitive function  One special way to make our hobbies work for our mental wealth more is to ‘mindful hobby’. Using simple mindfulness techniques to improve the benefit of our hobby time. Being present in the moment, concentrating on what we are doing rather than letting our minds race. ------------------------- I hope that this has given you all food for thought,  perhaps you will look for a new hobby, or perhaps you may look at your hobbies in a more respectful way;  they are doing you and your mental health more good than you may realise!

Hobbies and Motivation!

...See more This is Motivational March and so I wanted to discuss with you about your hobbies and what motivates you to get started! Often I find it hard to motivate myself and so I might look at doing other things for a while. If I am in a 'hobby slump' and just want to find another project then that is exactly what I do. So often I might have many 'WIP' work in progress. I also know sometimes I look at all my yarn and knitting needles and groan! I love knitting but sometimes I just want to watch tv! I found my mojo when I wanted a new beanie hat, it was something I could easily knit AND watch tv lol! And, of course I got a warm hat :) So please take a moment to answer the following questions, of perhaps just read and think about them. ? Could you please tell me how you motivate yourself to spend time on your hobbies? ? Which hobby do you feel motivates you the most? ? Which hobby do you find the most rewarding? World Dracula Day!

Last post
May 29th
...See more Hey everyone! Some of you know my favorite all-time book is 'Dracula' by Bram Stoker.  The first book about vampires and the undead that led to many many more different types of vampire-ish plots and characters. Today, 127 years ago, in 1897, that book was first published!  So, to celebrate all things Dracula, and Vampire, we have a spooktacular post! Some facts:- - A signed, first-edition copy of the book sold for over $33,000 at auction! - There is a sequel! Yes! written by Bram Stoker's great-grand-nephew! Dracula the Un-Dead" by Dacre Stoker and Ian Holt (2009) - Vampire bats do exist, and survive on drinking blood! Christopher Lee as 'Dracula' in the 1958 film. Bella Lugosi in the 1931 film. Oooops . . . Edward and Bella Cullen! World Dracula Day not only honors Bram Stoker's groundbreaking work but also celebrates the broader cultural phenomenon of vampire lore. Whether you're a literary enthusiast, a horror fan, or just curious about the origins of one of the most iconic figures in fiction, World Dracula Day offers something intriguing for everyone * * Are you scared of the dark? It is well-known that vampires can only come out after dark, but stories like ‘Twilight’ and ‘Vampire Diaries’ changed all that, so beware! * Garlic may keep vampire bats away but it was said that Dracula wasn’t scared.  Do you like garlic? Share with us your best garlic dish. * Share with us your thoughts on vampires, do you enjoy watching them or reading about them, what film or book do you like the best or do they bore you? How has your month been? What have you achieved with your hobbies? Share with us!

...See more Zero Free Waste Week This week 5th September to 9th September covers zero waste week! A whole week when people are challenged to have zero waste! That could mean crisping up your potato peelings in the air fryer, using your carrot tops as a green pesto, or creating something from your cardboard waste whether that be as a weed suppressant or as Christmas decorations. Compost your food waste, or better still portion control so there is less waste! So what will you do this week to recycle, upcycle or re-use? What is your best tip about how to create less waste? Do you use a re-useable water bottle? The Big Garden Birdwatch

...See more Are there any keen bird spotters here? Or are you interested in watching, photographing or drawing birds and wildlife? [Image of a Robin looking at it’s reflection in a window] Did you know, in the UK, every last weekend in January, people up and down the country take time to participate in the Big Garden Birdwatch? People are encouraged to spend an hour observing their natural space to watch and count the birds and wildlife in their local area. The public then feedback all of their wildlife sightings to the RSPB. The RSPB (The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds) are a conservation charity, who monitor the status of bird and wildlife populations using the data provided during these surveys. Every bird watch matters and everyone who takes part is taking action to protect birds for generations to come. To encourage birds into your garden, you can make your own DIY bird feeders using a hollowed out orange half, tying string to hang it and filling it with seeds. [Image shows an orange hanging by string, filled with black sunflower seeds] You don’t need a garden to participate, the birdwatch can be done in a local park or green space nearby. And if you need help with identification, there are lots of resources and ID looks up on Google! Want to take a fun quiz to find out what kind of bird you are? QUIZ HERE [https://www.rspb.org.uk/get-involved/activities/birdwatch/which-garden-bird-are-you/] If you are in the UK, you can find more details about the Big Garden Birdwatch, 27th - 29th January 2023 HERE [https://www.rspb.org.uk/get-involved/activities/birdwatch/] 🌿If you are in another country, do you have anything similar that helps monitor the wildlife that you could take part in? Or you could spend some time outside to enjoy the nature around you and take some time to relax and unwind. 🌼Please let us know in the comments if you take part and what you spotted! Or share with us your favourite or rare bird/wildlife spots! Tips for using the new format!

...See more The new community forum pages are up and running and they look fantastic! A few changes make it easier to use. First, a few terms explained:- 'Thread' is the term used for each new group of posts that follow and continue on from one that started that group. The 'original post' is the first post made in a thread and the 'original poster' or 'op' is the user that posted that first post. A bit like words and sentences. The posts are words and they are joined together to make sentences, with the OP being the start. A new post can be created from the main page and then the most suitable 'topic' is chosen rather than having to scroll and find the sub-forum that is wanted and then starting a new post there. Click on the 'Create a New Thread' then click on 'Select Topic' which then shows a dropdown menu of all the topics you can choose from. (Each sub-community has its own list of topics, this picture shows the top part of Hobby Zone's). Now . . . Write your post! Then press the blue button bottom left to ' Add Thread'. There is also the option to Subscribe to this Thread, it is checked already

...See more To start off, I guess I'll define what amigurumi is for those who aren't familiar with the term. Amigurumi is the Japanese art of knitting or crocheting small, stuffed yarn creatures or dolls. Amigurumi vary in size, and appearance. I am an avid crafter, I enjoy all sorts of different mediums and outlets, one that I've spent a lot of my time on recently has been crocheting various amigurumi. I often take requests for different forms people want to see, currently on my hook and not quite ready for it's photographic debut is a little red dragon. Some days I will make 2 or 3 of these projects in a day, other times it will take me a few days to finish all the pieces for one. What I love about this form of crochet is that it's nearly all worked in spiral rounds, so there is less struggle working into a foundation chain. Not to mention somehow no matter what you make, they almost always end up cute which boosts my mood. Further, they can work up quickly so it's easier to stay motivated and have the satisfaction that comes from completing something. I regularly find cute patterns for free online, or even just use my own knowledge of basic shapes and forms after all those patterns to create my own. For example I recently made up my own pattern for a tiny little "Noni" and used the basics design from another pattern to create my own pattern for a sloth. When I first started making amigurumi, I used the recommended hook sizes from patterns, often a 3.25mm or D hook but found that I wanted a denser fabric where you couldn't see any of the stuffing inside and now use a 1.3mm(US10) hook regardless of the weight of the yarn I'm using. I also finally invested in safety eyes instead of sewing on beads or buttons which may have been my best decision yet! Overall what I've learned is that the patterns are a good guide especially when you are starting out, but it's okay to find what works best for you as you pick up new tips and tricks along the way. Complicated as they may look, amigurumi can actually be a great crochet project for beginners! Questions to ponder: * Do you knit/crochet? What project(s) are you currently working on? * Have you ever made an amigurumi? * If you have, what did you find most challenging/rewarding? (I'd also love to see pictures!) * If not, is there anything you feel would stop you from trying? * If you were going to pick your own amigurumi pattern to try, what would you want to make?
