Going to third shift soon
Any advice for working third shift? I’ll be working 3 12 hour shifts overnight and going to switch sleep schedule during week
@sincereIdea8304
Hey there!.. I'm a Nurse, and actually worked the Nightshift for many years. I started out as a Nursing assistant who worked 8 hour shifts/5 days a week for 5 years.
Then I became a Nurse who worked 3 12hr shifts / 3 days a week for 10 years!... So I totally understand.
I think everyone is different. And My body "at the time" was used to staying up late-nights, so it was easier (I feel) for me to adapt to working the nightshift for 8 hours when I first started. But I found that condensing that to only "3" nights a week for 12 hours was better. As it gave me 4 more nights a week to be "OFF" of work! And to look forwards too!. So I kept that in my mind, kept my eye on that prize.
But some advice I can give (as I don't know your situation or if you have kids, or married etc..etc..) Is to make sure you set the best schedule you can for yourself and do your best to stick with it especially on the days that you work. Be sure to lay down at a reasonable time during the day so that you are rested for the night ahead. Make your room dark if you can, wear a sleep mask to darken out the daylight. .... Use a sound-machine or a calming app to help you get to sleep if you feel that you can't. And after working all night, once you get home, you might be a little wired from working all night and might not be able to sleep right away, but try to. Freshen yourself up, get a light breakfast in if you can, put on some light music or again a calming app, and try to lay back down as soon as you can and sleep as much as you are able. If you wake up earlier in the day, try to find time to take a quick nap before going back into work if you can.
These are the things that helped me. Good luck!
