Pop-up discussions are back!

Hello and welcome to the revival of pop-up discussions

In 2020, we received a suggestion from a teen member to revive pop-up discussions and @Hope worked a lot on this front to bring it back. It was loved by everyone who hosted or attended these discussions. Thank you Hope for all your foundational work and for empowering us. 

Now we are in 2024, and we introducing Pop-up Discussions 3.0 with some new changes to make it more inclusive, accessible, and more sessions to participate in. I invite you all to host or participate in these sessions. Let’s get started! 

What is a pop-up discussion?

It is a short discussion on lighthearted topics. It lasts 15 -45 minutes each. The primary goal is to have more focused opportunities to discuss and share in an inclusive space for everyone to come together and participate. 

Why should you host pop-ups?

They are super fun and convenient. You can host one without any planning and you can do anytime and as many as you like to based on your availability. Do you have 15 minutes? Feel free to start one. 

It can be a good way to get to know other members in the group chats and encourage/ empower others to open up and share their thoughts. 

Also, do you know? There is a special “Pop-up Ninja” badge. You can earn it by hosting 3 discussions in a week. 

Who can host one? 

Both Listeners and Members. 

How can you host one?

You can choose a script from the following available scripts and host the discussion in the appropriate room

• Member Side Scripts
• Listener Scripts

Where can you host? 

Adult

• Group Chat for member pop-up discussion - Special events,  Positivity Corner
• Group Chat for listener pop-up discussion - Listener Community Chat

Teen

• Group Chat for Member pop-up discussion - Teen Community Room, Special events 
• Group Chat for Listener pop-up discussion - Teen Hangout, Teen Listeners

Please note: 

• Special events, Positivity Corner, and Teen Hangout are pop-up group chats that need to be opened by someone who has the special privilege to open/ close group chats. 
• They are known as Doorkeepers. You can find one in the listener support chats or contact a moderator/ community moderator on shift. 

Helpful tips to keep in mind: 

• Ensure to set a discussion banner with “your name” and must have “Pop-up” in the banner. If you are unable to set a banner, you can take the help of anyone including community moderators to set a discussion banner for you
• When you require assistance such as a room opening or setting up a banner, please reach out to the community moderator on duty with a kind and polite message. Please understand that they may be managing multiple rooms simultaneously. Allow them a few moments to acknowledge and respond to your request.
• All pop-up discussions can be 15, 30, or 45 minutes based on your availability to host one.

• Ensure to welcome all participants and repeat questions when a few more people join in. So all can participate. 
• Do not rush into asking all questions. Host it at a comfortable pace where all participants can share. 
• Use active listening skills to empathize, reflect, and validate with the participants.
