recommendation
Hi there!
I suppose there are people like me who like to read books... I would like you to recommend books to me. It may be your favorite or someone who has marked you or changed the way you see some things. I have mostly read detective novels but I finished reading The Lady of the Camellias by Alexandre Dumas and I would like to try new genres!
@ladykitana hi there!
Some of my favourite books are:
(TW needed) The Discovery of Heaven by Harry Mulisch. Originally Dutch, which is the language I read it in, it's a huge novel of over 900 pages about everything. The world, religion, our lives, fate, science and much more. It changed my world view forever! Though it's a big commitment and you need a lot of prior knowledge of a lot of different things, such as history, politics and astronomy, so it's definitely not a light read.)
(TW needed) Pachinko by Min Jin Lee. A historical, immigrant family drama. A recommendation if you're into history! It follows the stories and lives of a Korean family and the story starts right before the Korean war, so it's an emotionally turbulent book. Don't recommend reading if you're triggered by certain themes I can't name here (I think), but a great read nonetheless!
(TW needed) When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi. The author is actually the person this book is about, but it's not really an autobiography. Instead, the book is about the author, a neurosurgeon in training, who suddenly gets diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. The book describes his struggles with his mortality, his hope for the future as he becomes a father and many many more intriguing themes, all wrapped up in a gorgeous little box since Kalanithi's writing is so soothing to read.
The Folk of the Air series by Holly Black. Unlike my previous recommendations, these books are a lot more light to read. It's 4 books, all following the same characters, in a fantasy world. The worldbuilding is amazing! And if you buy the first 3 books in a bundle you can get them at a discount rate! The main character is Jude Duarte, who is a normal human mortal, who has to find a way to survive (and thrive) in the faerie world, where she is hated and looked down upon for her lack of magic. Although there is bullying and some angst in the books, it's a pretty light read.
(TW needed) The Green Mile by Stephen King. As a book lover a Stephen King cannot be missing from this list. I hope you've already read this book but if not; I recommend this one! It's my favourite of King's works (though I haven't read all of them yet, ofcourse). It's about a prison warden who thinks one of his prisoners has been wrongfully accused and imprisoned in Death Row. The prisoner seems to have some kind of supernatural gift, which will be revealed in the book.
(TW = Trigger Warning)
Most books on this list are heavy and contain some triggers, though, if you have any questions which triggers and which books you can read if you just want a light read send me a DM (this goes for anyone reading this comment) and I can tell you :)
