There's nothing wrong with how I feel

Stop saying 'Sorry you feel that way.' It invalidates the feeling and the person experiencing it. A person feels bad for a reason, and it's the reason you should show sorrow for.

true. That sentence is not the way to validate someone's emotions. Instead, we should normalize emotion by letting them know that it's okay to feel the way they do. 💛

@Buzzyjoe , I am not very fond of its use either. While I think it's a way one can express empathy , it's so often used these days  without any true feelings behind it , that it's hard to believe  if the person actually cares or not . And getting that impression when we are down isn't pretty .

@Buzzyjoe , all of us deserves to know that it's okay to feel low. That it doesn't make us a failure , rather a Normal human being. But I don't understand how the phrase you quoted says otherwise? While it's allowed to be sad , isn't it also hard for those who cares , to witness someone they care about going through a rough time ? Isn't that what the phrase conveys ?

@Skytied Not to me. To me it conveys that my feeling is the problem, not the problem that is causing the feeling. It's basically saying 'You shouldn't feel that way.'

Yes, this statement is invalidating. It especially hurts when someone does something hurtful and when confronted with how we feel about that, they say, "I'm sorry you feel that way", or that "I'm sorry you took it that way". In this way they avoid taking responsibility for their actions. Also makes you feel low for feeling that way, as you mentioned.

on my first few chats on my listener account i did actually use this phrase. but a while ago i realised that it didn't help at all and may have even made the person think they're not normal or that it's not okay to be feeling that way and be pressured into feeling a different way!

It's so triggering indeed. It makes you feel like you're talking to a robot that always has to say "the right thing".
