Do I have an eating disorder?

walrusss October 1st, 2021

I don't think it's really that bad but sometimes I get really sad and the only thing that helps me is eating in excessive amounts, then I look in the mirror or weight myself and feel horrible which sometimes has me eating even more or eating as little as I can.

I don't know if this is normal or not but i guess everyone has certain times when they eat a lot? I don't know. help? :/

@walrusss I'm not an expert, so I looked up the official (DSM-5) definition of an eating disorder. It has to be persistent (not just sometimes), and it has to "significantly [impair] physical health or psychosocial functioning" (not just make you feel horrible for a while).

I agree with you—many people have certain times when they eat a lot. I suppose if it happens to you more and more often, and if it starts to interfere with your life, then there might be a risk it could cross the line and become a disorder. There's information about emotional eating on the Internet. For example, I found this article: Emotional Eating vs. Eating Disorders: How to Tell the Difference

Also, if you often get really sad, your sadness itself might be something worth speaking to someone about so that you can have a happier life. Maybe you have access to a counsellor or someone like that. Maybe chatting to a listener here at 7 Cups about it could help.
