What do you like about your LD?
Hey everyone!
I thought there should be a place to share positive stories/ aspects of learning disabilities as well, so I thought this would be a good place to post something you love about your learning dissability.
My top three:
1) I AM CREATIVE - I'm super creative which has given me a good way to relax and chill out after a long day because I can make fun out of anything!
2) I FIX STUFF - ok this one has to do with creativity a bit, but I think it deserves its own category. Since I was little I remember having a take-apart-box. My parents would put anything that they were done with, or was broken in the box and I could take it out and completely apart. I think it was boththe take-apart-box and my creativity that allows me to be awesome at taking stuff apart, finding the problem, and finding a solution, even if its not your normal fix.
3) I AM AWESOME AT PUZZLES - my visual/spatial, and mental rotation skills are some of my strengths, I remember using these as strengths in high school when I couldn't take notes and pay attention at the same time so I learned to memorize the information based on the shape and color it was when presented on the board.
SO! - once again share your favorite skills or parts of having a learning dissability, because yes there are difficulties, but there are some definite strengths as well, and we should celebrate those!
I can't see me being dyslexic a good thing, yes I am very creative and having to go through the struggles of having a learning disability that wasn't diagnosed until I was already an adult has me tough, but I still wish I wasn't dyslexic. Being creative doesn't help me when I have to read a whole book in a week for college.
@rootb22 I understand your frustration college is really exhausting. I do have a math disability although it's different from dyslexia it's a very slow process and time consuming.
Have you been able to get books on tape for your class? I do have accomedations so I can use a recorder. Helps if I can't take notes at the time. Or my friend who has a reading disability will scan the document looking for certain words and highlight them. This way he can get the basic understanding of the article with out taking a longer process in reading the whole page.
@ColorfulMeg Yeah mine let's me get books i purchase as pdf files and gave me access to a program that does text to speech on those books. Though as an engineer I've gotten around a lot of that so i don't have to read hardly at all. If i don't understand something then i watch a video, so that helps me keep up with my processing disorder. I know I've had a few professors with adhd, dyslexia, ect, and that's encouraging to me to see that even though they may switch numbers sometimes or got off track a lot they were still able to get through college and get their degree
I have dyscalculica it is a math disability. I suppose my disibility makes me more patient with others when they struggle. I feel very empathetic and patient when dealing with store workers or customer service. That stuff is really hard, and I understand the feeling of being really slow at something with learning or with working.
@ColorfulMeg
its awesome that you are able to have that perspective and support others because of your experience!
@ColorfulMeg Thanks for sharing. You did an amazing job.
I feel like I started to learn how to find alternate ways to do things that play more to my strengths and not to ways to do things that I just can't do or that it is nearly impossible for me to do, so resilience and problem-solving?
@MonkeyPineMarten Thanks for sharing. You did an amazing job at sharing. I know what you are going through.
