Online learning with a Disability

Azalea98 February 16th, 2021

I hope you are all well💙

This may be a little late for you all as I know many country’s have come out of lockdown but England is still in lockdown and as I’m still in school. Online learning has been my bitter reality for the past few months.

Aside from not being able to receive the same quality teaching there are some things I have really struggled with being dyslexic:

1) The teacher going very quickly (I have slow handwriting and the teacher used to be able to see when I stopped writing before they continued)

2) My exam concessions not being taken into account in class tests as it normally would have been

3) Difficulty with fonts of my textbooks. (Normally I would be given sheets with different fonts to help me read)

4) Being unable to see the teacher causing many issues with processing the information and being able to actually retain it

I think the list could go on much longer!

I would love to hear your experience with online learning.

Have you found it easier to cope with classes or struggled more then you usually would if the teaching was in person?

Hey @Azalea98 this is an interesting topic to bring up.

My entire university degree is online only, though we could meet up once a month to discuss materials and upcoming assignments before the pandemic.

I enjoy online learning. I find it's more flexible to my schedule and I can work on it whenever I feel good enough to, or take a break when I'm not feeling so great. :)

@SilentSerenityy

Yes I 100% agree! One of the best things about online learning is the flexible timetable that most people are able to have.

Something to consider:

Would you still enjoy online learning if you had a timetable/ non flexible schooling schedule you had to follow daily?

@Azalea98 I am sorry your having trouble with online learning.

I have a learning disability and do not drive,so I learn new things,by taking courses online.

I happen to love it.

What part of the online learning,do you have trouble the most,for example do you have a hard time reading the assignments,then doing them?

Do you need a lot of help with reading?

Is it remembering login information?

Maybe ask the school,if you could stop your studies,and then pick them up again,when it is safe to do in person learning.

Just a thought.

Hope things get better for you.

@Happy900

Hi Happy! I'm honoured you replied to one of my posts I have seen all you have done for this wonderful sub forum prior to me taking over it and I thank you so much for that, If you are still wanting to help run this sub forum I would be honoured to work with you! 😊

All amazing questions you asked! Great to consider!

I will even answer them myself:

1) I stuggle with doing the assignments I can read them just fine!

2)I have an overlay to help my reading! A yellow one to be specific! I am an English literature student and I take 2 essay subjects for my studies so I wouldn't say I need a lot of help but definitely more the the average student!

If you were interested I did a post talking about my experience with learning Disabilities and what I have in a bit more detail: https://www.7cups.com/forum/DisabilitySupport_47/LearningDisabilitiesSupport_262/IntroductionsandBrainstorm_233212/

3) I write all my log in information somewhere and keep it safe! I find this is really helpful to do ☺️

4) I am actually just 17 which means I have to be in compulsory full time education! I don't have the option to stop my studies when i want (oh how I wish I could!)

Thank you so much for sharing your questions!

Hello! Just a heads up, the different font colours are a little bit difficult to read, especially the lighter colours and the last darker blue one. It might cause some problems for users with disabilities surrounding their eyes. As for your post, I’ve found personally that it’s been really helpful not having to physically force myself to go to class. However, classes are much more demanding now and I’m struggling without having that structure in place

@yellowfeathers

Thank you for your feedback!

I definitely do try and keep all my words highlighted instead of different font colours as I too find it difficult to read fonts with different colours, but unfortunately many people will not read the post if its not brightly coloured and fun!

The bottom two are in the lighter font as they are links and that's the natural colour of links. All the fonts I change the colour of I try and make them in bold and dark colours so that it is easier to read. Do you find reading the highlighted words difficult too? Personally highlighting helps me so I would love to hear your feedback on this.

I agree about the lack of structure being provided it can be very difficult!

and yes not having to physically drag myself to class has been wonderful I defiantly agree with that perk (although I still have to drag myself out of bed!)
