Job and Autism Disclosure

LilWriter1401 January 8th, 2023

Hi,

I have Autism and my work does not know of it. I work in Retail.

My job has been receiving customer complaints about me. My manager told me this in an arrogant way. I started to have fears of getting fired. I have been fired before over this stuff.

I have been considering telling them that I have Autism. I hope this will reduce the risk of losing my job.

Should I tell my employer about my disability or not? I am experiencing too much anxiety over this.

I'm sorry that you're going through this stressful period. It is entirely up to you whether you want to disclose your condition to your manager. It's a personal decision.

However, sharing your diagnosis may help your manager to understand why you're getting complaints (assuming they are related to you having autism), and hopefully support you better in your job. It should also protect you under disability laws (you should look into these in your area to learn what your rights are). This means if your manager decided to fire you or intentionally pushed you out of your job, after you told them you have autism, this would most likely be an unlawful dismissal related to disability and you'd be able to take them to a tribunal.

I hope this is helpful to you. <3
