Does your disability ever keep you from getting a job in your desired field?

brunettebabe676 November 26th, 2017

When I went to college, I did so with the belief that I would be able to work with the disability community after I graduated. Now that I have graduated, I find that all the entry level positions for the jobs here require driving. Due to the brain surgery I went through, I have issues with my peripheral vision and am unable to drive. I do not want to get a job that does not relate to this goal in some way. I have been working really hard trying to find a job but it is very frustrating. About a week ago my mother asked if I didn't get one yet because I didn't want to work. It was a major hit to my self esteem.

It's very frustrating. I quit school because of how sick I was and after being on medical leave for a long time I just wasn't getting to the point where I needed to be to return. I had no job for quite a while after that.

I finally am working, but it's minimal hours and there have been times where it has still been a stuggle.

It's certainly not where I expected to end up based on my academic career leading up to quitting school. I am very happy to have found such a good fit for my situation, but ideally I wouldn't be in this situation.

@AffyAvo

honestly, I wanted to quit taking classes for a while but my parents would not let me. I am happy I have a degree but I wish I could go somewhere with it.

I'm glad you were able to get a job. what kind of work do you do?

@brunettebabe676 If it were just classes I might have been able to stick through it with some accomodations. My program required 60 hours a week though and my classes for the program were completed.

I don't feel all that comfortable discussing my employment online. The majority of it is working from home though.

@AffyAvo

I would not be able to do 60 a week either. I only took 2 classes a semester.

I understand about not wanting to share info too

I had to prob out of college cause i spent to much time in mental care hospitals from being stressed and mood swings. As of getting a job I don't know where to start I don't even know how to drive a car let alone count money well.
