Well today is National Coconut Cream Pie day, but it poses a question I often think about….

  • How often does one with disabilities have to adapt their diet or not consume something they love simply to make sure their health stays well?

  • What is your go to substitute when you are craving something but can’t have it?

  • Lastly, how did the first quarter of the year go for you? What is something you are looking for?

I wish I had a little coconut cream tart or something now 😊

Food restrictions can vary so much! My absolute do not eat foods are fairly limited. There are other things I do avoid when unwell or limit in general as well as the go to foods. Plus medical appointments can have food restrictions connected to them.

The only thing that really jumps out was sushi, I just started eating it (not the raw fish kind) before I figured out I had a fish allergy. If I trust a place, I will order vegetarian or beef/chicken rolls (not the best fusion food out there,) or will mix the ingredients in a bowl if doing it myself because I am not going into the effort of making nice rolls. I have also discovered some good, fairly inexpensive alcohol free beers, wish I could find some no-alcohol wine that was good! I enjoy a beer on a hot day and as a bonus the alcohol isn't helping anything when it's hot out anyway.

Not too great, there's been a lot of stressors and throw my illnesses in on top of that and my heart was just not into some things that normally I would be really into. COVID precautions also make the cold months difficult. I'm looking forward to some nice days and getting outside.

@AffyAvo I did not realize that there was non alcoholic beers out there. I have a gluten intolerance so some beers I can't have even to begin with. I've never thought about sushi before but that makes sense to avoid the raw fish ones if you have an allergy.

I'm sorry you have a lot of stressors right now. I will agree that the colder months are harder when isolating for covid precautions. I hope warm weather comes your way soon!

@wonderfulRainbow817 Wow! coconut cream pie sounds delish right now!

  • How often does one with disabilities have to adapt their diet or not consume something they love simply to make sure their health stays well?
Well, celiac is one that springs to mind, missing out on so many foods and having to be super careful about others, and, I found out recently that even making sure that the restrictions about gluten are adhered to there are still problems with gut absorption and needing supplements of some fat-soluble vitamins! Learning all the time!

  • What is your go to substitute when you are craving something but can’t have it?

I am lucky, I don't really get cravings any more, but simple things like double-trouble jelly babies are one!

  • Lastly, how did the first quarter of the year go for you? What is something you are looking for?

It was pretty tough if I am honest! Now I am looking for some satisfaction, I am looking to achieve more fitness and a sunshine filled summer please,Thanks for the check-in! :)

@MistyMagic, I have a gluten intolerance so I can understand the struggles with that. A lot of people don't realize how much gluten is in things. I just learned that even toothpaste can have gluten in some!

I am hoping for sunshine filled days too! It was nice here today. I hope it comes your way!

Ooh great post!

How often does one with disabilities have to adapt their diet or not consume something they love simply to make sure their health stays well?

I definitely have to change my diet and I feel like it's always changing. I can't have carrageenan because I'm allergic. For those of you who don't know what that is (I feel like most people don't know what it is), Carrageenan is made from parts of various red seeweeds and is used as a additive to thicken and preserve food and drinks. Some countries don't allow Carrageenan to be used in foods.

I also have IBS so have to watch out for spicy food (even though I love eating spicy food) and other foods that flare up my IBS.

I have GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) so I have to limit the amount of carbonated drinks I have. I can't really eat tomatores and black pepper can sometime cause the heart burn to be bad.

Due to my heart condition, I am prone to getting edema in my legs too so have to watch the sodium levels.

What is your go to substitute when you are craving something but can’t have it?

Its hard to say if I have a substitute or not. I try to be pretty good with my diet so I allow myself to have treats every once in a while even if it causes a mini flare up. Caffeine, in some people, can cause flare ups but it hasn't ever bothered me. So my coffee is my happy treat.

Lastly, how did the first quarter of the year go for you? What is something you are looking for?

The first quarter of the year was actually good for me. It's going better than the last few years that's for sure. I came back to Cups and now have roles that allow me to help Listeners which is so awesome! I love helping the members out and love being part of the Disability Support Community!!

@beck1, thanks for sharing! I did not know what Carrageenan was so I learned something new today! I have the opposite problem with sodium. I have POTS (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome) and the one thing us Potsies love is sodium. I can eat a whole salt shaker a day and it still wouldn't be enough for my body personally.

I am glad things are going better this year for you! I can honestly and personally say we enjoy having you on the Disability Team! You bring so much energy and positivity!

@wonderfulRainbow817

1. i have to avoid gluten due to issues i have got.

2. I found a lot of gluten free substitutes for food i love and so, i don't feel deprived due to it.

3. First quarter of this year went well for me, except in the part that i got information for my mother that i was source of stress for her in my childhood which made me feel very disappointed and sad. I am looking forward nice and relaxing summer (vacation at sea).
