How to cope with your and your partner's depression

NebulaInfinity January 24th, 2021

I have been dealing with depression for the past 5yrs and things have gotten better in the past 5 months . But the last 2weeks I've gotten off track and thoughts spiralling towards people would be better off without me are becoming more and more frequent. On top of that my boyfriend has been getting depressed over his career at the moment too and has a lot on his plate. And I want to be there for him and not be a debbi downer nor pump him with excess positivity either. I don't know how to accomplish all this , please help

First off try not to worry too much about having a rough spot the last few weeks. I know it's not that easy to just change how you feel about it, but remember that everyone has rough patches, no one gets better on the first try. With a bit of strength and plenty of support you can get through this. Secondly, anytime I think people are better off without me, I try asking some of them how I've helped them, if they like knowing me. It can be eye opening, seeing how the little things you do can have big impacts on other's lives. Now I'll admit I'm far from an expert on relationships, but one thing I would do wass setting aside a small amount of time to just enjoy the other person's company. You don't have to talk or even be doing the same thing, something as simple as drinking some tea could be 10 times better by just staying mindful about the other person and what you mean to each other. And finally, it's important to remember you can't do everything perfectly all the time. No one that matters is expecting you to figure out every little problem in your life right away. These things take time, just try your best, even if that means you can only get started on one thing for a whole day. It doesn't matter if it's by miles or millimeters, as long as you're moving in the right direction. Sorry for the wall of text, with any luck you'll find at least one thing helpful. Just remember to take some time to breathe.
