scared of recovery

amusingSail8830 July 29th, 2020

ive been diagnosed with at least one mental illness since the age of 4 and the thought of being mentally healthy scares me since i genuinely do not know who i would be without it as it has been with me since a very very young age. of course it would be much easier to live my life without any disorders and that is indeed desirable however the thought of not knowing what i would be like without my illnesses terrifies me.

Hi! Thank you so much for sharing this. I understand that you're scared; I would be too in your position. Now, you presented the "terrifying" part of your situation (which is completely valid). In this process, have you ever considered that you could actually like the person you become once recovered? I mean, it is not an easy process finding out who you are, specially when something that was always present is now absent. Every situation has a scary part, but there's also a good side to it. I would like for you to try to identify the bad (which you already have) and the good parts. Any life-changing process that comes into our lives is terrifying; but scary does not mean that it might not be positive for you. Sometimes fear can keeps us from moments that would actually enrich our lives. :) Reach out to me, or any other listener if you need a 1:1 chat with someone.
