Lets talk about our therapists

TamaraSRB October 18th, 2021

Im starting this topic due to experience that i had with my therapist. They all have their own method and sometimes its good for one person, for another one is completely terrible. I have been in a situation of changing my therapist after 2 months. I didnt see the point, i was more and more confused, with a lot of open and unfinished topics. And i changed it with someone who opened one topic and in 1 hour my throat started to be more relaxed.I want to hear more about your experiences with therapists? Are you satisfied? How long have you been involved in a process of therapy

Hi--I haven't been in therapy for a long time, but I'm happy to hear that you were able to have that positive experience with changing your therapist and that the new one feels better. 💜 You're right that therapists can differ in their style or approach, and sometimes what works for one person doesn't work for another person.

@TamaraSRB I'm glad you changed therapists and felt better. I struggle a lot with feeling intimidated by standing up to a therapist and expressing I'm upset about something because if they are angry or defensive, I will lose my support for my mental health. I have changed therapists before but it felt like a really exhausting process to deal with finding someone who takes my insurance, long waitlists, etc.

Hey Tamara,

I'm sorry you didn't have a good experience with one of the therapists you met and changed after 2 months. I'm glad the new therapist made a very good and positive impact on you and was able to help you feel better and more relaxed. I have been to a lot of therapists and it took me a long time to find the right one. I am satisfied with the one I currently am seeing. I've been going to therapy for around 3 years now. I know it's not easy when you don't have a connection with your therapist and it feels like it's not helping. I felt that way with the first 4 until I came around to my fifth one. I feel like I have a connection with her and it's easier to talk about things with her than it would have been with the other 3. Also having to do it virtual during covid didn't help and just made things worse. This is my input and my experience. I hope my message finds you safe and healthy.

Therapy can be a journey for sure! I find it helps to let them know very early on what your goals are and what you hope to gain from your sessions. That way they have a bit of a road map for what they are offering and supporting with. Long ago I had a therapist and I was in such a scattered place that I didn't know what I needed which made their job pretty tough. In more recent years I've been able to articulate what I hoped to work on and found therapy more productive and helpful. Best of luck with your new therapist.
