Depression should be treated like any other illness.

I've been going through Depression for a while now, and the worst thing I can hear from the people that are close to me is that I need to "snap out of it" or I need to stop being down all the time. That's not how Depression works. By saying I need to stop being down all the time, that's implying that I have a choice to be happy. I don't choose to be depressed. I don't think anybody would want to be depressed...Just because you can't see depression doesn't mean it isn't real. Just because you aren't depressed doesn't mean that depressed people don't feel pain. Pain is pain regardless, and mental illness needs to be treated like physical illnesses. The stigma needs to end. Having a mental illness doesn't mean you are doing stuff for attention. Nobody deserves to suffer. Anyways, whatever, sorry for this long post. If you have read through everything say, peaches lol... I don't know why I choose peaches out of all things... Stay strong! ❣

Peaches! Absolutely agree. No one ever chooses to have depression and no one deserves it. I know some people disagree but I think mental health should be taught in schools the same way physical health is. If kids can learn about germs and catching colds, they can be taught at an early age that our emotions and mind can be affected and 'ill' too. This will ensure the new generation is at the very least, educated even if it doesn't completely solve the stigma issue.

@LilGreenBird

You actually said peaches haha 😂

Yes, everything you said is well said. Mental illness should be taught in schools and not shamed and frowned upon. It's like any other illness, just that it's an illness of the mind.

Yup. Gotta love them peaches.

Not only should it be destigmatised, teaching basic management techniques is also necessary, in my opinion. We all know how to take care of ourselves when we get a cold, but knowing how to handle emotional distress in ourselves and others can make a world of difference. We need to move away from specialist/hospital based care and start looking at it at a community level.

I also agree. There is so much stigma on mental health. There's all kinds of mental health out there.

It's only those what been through it understand. I'm not saying the ones what don't arnt understanding but for me having someone what's going through it helps me alot to know I'm not on my own.

Knowing we're not alone will help us and having more people understand will make a big difference.

Continue being who we are

I mainly believe that if you go through it yourself, you have a better understanding and you can relate more to the person suffering. However, what you said is true. Just knowing that other people out there are going through what I'm going through makes me feel less alone, and I kind of have hope that eventually there will be more help given towards mental health issues.
