Prompt

Even though there are no stars today, the moon is very beautiful. Paul could only enjoy it for a few seconds as he walked past with his eyes fixed on the moon.

“Mom, may I have the pleasure of sitting and staring right at the front door.” Paul asked his lovely mother who was concerned about Paul's strange habit of staying outside the door with the excuse of looking for the moon.

“Honey no, it would be creepy if you sat in front of the door and stared blankly at the sky above, doing that in the middle of the night. Once or twice a week is okay, but not daily, dear.” Paul’s Mommy answered considerately.

“Hmm, okay mom. Anyway, it's not just a moon, but a red full moon with wispy clouds. If you were given time to look at the moon like Moon Lovers you would definitely melt. Uuhh it's so cubby and calming, isn't it? It feels like time has frozen looking at it.” Paul still tried to persuade his mom a little bit.

Paul can understand his mom restrictions. He is able to accept it wholeheartedly. Currently, Paul always longing to spends his time connecting with nature. Whether it's going to the backyard to watch the sunset after gardening or enjoying the rain like you're enjoying your inner child and innocence. But for him, moonlight was the best of all, and it was never enough.

What happens next when Paul still long of nature and the silence of the moon?

Paul was now in bed with his face in the pillow, and he asked in his own mind, "why can't it be a full red moon every night?"

To his surprise, he got a very clear answer that he didn't quite understand, "BECAUSE PEOPLE WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO HANDLE IT."

Paul was startled and felt a rise in his heartbeat and asked, "whose voice is that?". It was a voice he couldn't quite hear, but there was a tone of authority in it.

"COME OUTSIDE."

He wanted to go outside.  Badly.  He looked around the room, it was dark, and he tiptoed through the house, only hearing the tick of the grandfather clock and his mother's snoring.  As he passed the clock, he could see the moon's red reflection in the clock face.

He quietly opened the front door and went out to the stoop, looking up at the red moon, the wispy clouds passing by as if surrounding the moon itself.

"NOW LOOK AROUND YOU."

He gasped when he looked around and saw the ground looking redder, all of it was dry, trees were down to dead husks, and he turned around to see his own house diminished to rubble.  Just as he started to panic, he heard it again.

"THIS WOULD BE THE WORLD IF IT WAS ALWAYS A RED FULL MOON.  PEOPLE WOULD BE ANXIOUS, ANGRY, AND WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO SUSTAIN THE WORLD OR THEMSELVES."

Paul looked around again, seeing it like an alien landscape, as if the earth were another moon.

"LOOK UP AGAIN, PAUL.  THAT WORLD WILL NEVER HAPPEN, BUT YOU'RE IN TOUCH WITH NATURE, AND YOU ARE BEGINNING TO UNDERSTAND SUBTLE WAYS THAT IT EFFECTS PEOPLE. USE THIS KNOWLEDGE, IT IS INDEED POWER."

Paul got chills as he heard the voice telling him something that he didn't realize that he already knew.  He looked up into the red moon until he realized he didn't know how much time had passed.  He wasn't even surprised to see the world around him was back to normal.  Now, he hesitated... He wanted to be a good boy and go back to bed, but being in touch with nature, he knew that a night with this kind of moon would be perfect for staying up and playing all night.
