Why am I not happy in my new job?
I just got a new job. It’s a good job and I feel ungrateful not being happy about it. I know there are so many who would love to be in my position right now but I’m still not happy.
its in an area I don’t really know and I just feel alone and like I’m getting further and further away from my career goals of wanting to work in the publishing industry. What’s wrong with me? Why can’t I just appreciate the job I have? It’s an office job and I have my own apartment. What is wrong with me!? How do I learn appreciation, how do I learn to be happy about this? Just because it’s not exactly the job I want or even in the field I want, I’m not happy about.
huh I need to fix myself and I have no idea how. I just want to be happy.

I get it ... we may have a good job being paid and benefits but it is not fulfilling.
I would not follow idea of happy as in my experience happy is like a mirage and the closer you think you are you see it was not there. I think we need to build our happy in other things in our lives and be satisfied our job is where we get funds to enjoy the other parts of our lives. Sometimes creating a goal makes us feel more motivated to work in a decent job regardless if it is not our ideal one.
I try to take success out of a few tasks or satisfied outcomes in co-workers or in my case customers... that helps the days when things do not go well of i have to deal with others.
@drzombienoodles So you just started and it’s going to feel awkward for awhile. Not every job is going to be something we can “plug into.” But I would suggest these general things. Be great full for the money. Be grateful it is indoors. Try to list the positives. Now these by themselves won’t be enough but they can be building blocks to tolerating if not liking things just a little. Return to thinking about the gratitude you do have when things get boring or stressful. Or set a reminder to review your gratitude list every once in awhile. Next, develop some curiosity about your job or even yourself as you engage in various tasks. If you “look” closer at the experience you are having it can make you engage more even in boring tasks. Try to focus on just doing the task without plodding through it. Try to be aware of your breathing, how your body is tense or relaxed. Try not to let your mind just want to get this over with and move to the next task. You probably won’t be able to practice this all the time. Just try to remind yourself to do it once in awhile. These are techniques from mindfulness practice so you might want to find other sources that talk about these things better than I can. They seem to help me marginally when I practice them. In the past if I’d heard this I would be disappointed in anything that was “marginal.” No, I want 80 or percent improvement. But really, 10% improvement some of the time is a win and it can make a huge difference. 10% more relaxed can kind of foster the curiosity and gratitude and might even make you more efficient in your job. And the beauty in all this is that you don’t have to give up on your dream job. Right now you’re learning skills that will help you not only in this job but in others and life in general. You may come to be proud of these new soft skills and be grateful of these tools you’re developing. Also, if you try this and get a boost from it, don’t be disappointed if it doesn’t work as well every time. On average it works well but there are just some days that throw more at us or we’re just tired. Anyway, if you try this let us know what you think. Did it work? Did you find another solution?
