Status of autism spectrum/Neuro divergent training?
Does anyone know if there are any plans to create training on how to support people who are on the spectrum or who are neurodivergent.
As someone who helped create it, I know that the autism chat topic has been around for a while. It would be nice to have some training to go with that part.
@Jiminycricket91
I definitely think this would be important! A training guide would be super helpful for Listeners! Maybe @heather225 can weigh in on this?
I do know there are other resources available to listeners:
- Listener Support Guide: Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD)
-
Listener Check In - Handling Chats On Autism
Are these now? Where can you find them?
@Jiminycricket91 the blue writing is clickable 😊
In the past, most training guides have been based on therapeutic protocols from publishers like therapy works. They usually include a client guide and a therapist guide. Can you all help surface some protocols that you think are particularly good? If yes, then we can vote on them and convert one into a training guide.
Jiminycricket91,
I will be the first to admit that I want to learn more about this topic and have room to grow. I found this description of neurodivergent on Wikipedia and it does open a different perspective on the topic that maybe some could find helpful. Do you feel like it is an accurate statement?
Neurodiversity is a proposed framework that argues there is intrinsic diversity in human brain function and cognition, and that certain things currently classified as neurodevelopmental disorders and/or mental disorders are differences and disabilities but are not necessarily pathological.
