Travel Anxiety

I am traveling out of state to visit with family for Easter and I feel so out of sorts. All I can think about is what ifs. What if I have a panic attack and they think i’m crazy, what if my anxiety gets so bad I can’t act normal? Anyone have tips for travel anxiety?

Hello sorry to hear you are nervous, been there. Here are a couple ideas: (1) make an escape plan. Like in many comedies, people often come up with fake excuses before hand to leave a party early. You could plan ahead of time to say you ate something disagreeable and want to lay down on a bed for a few minutes. Something like that. (2) I have no idea what your family is like, but maybe they can relate to what you are going through. Anxiety is something everyone is familiar with. You can just be honest if you happen to be feeling anxious, they'll probably just want you to feel better. (3) Maybe do a little meta-thinking, think a little about how the act of thinking about "a situation you don't want to happen" causes anxiety. It's kind of tricky to grasp, but if you accept that your anxiety is being tricked into being turned on by the act of visualizing this hypotetical situation, then it follows that if you don't focus on it (and focus your attention on something else) then you will not feel anxious or nervous now or when you are with you family. But its really, really hard to not think of something, right? Here's a trick, whenever you are thinking about it, also think about the broader fact that the anxiety wont be there if you are not ruminating about it. In otherwords let yourself think of the bigger picture. The bigger picture includes you not ruminating and not being anxious as a real possibility. A problem with a known solution stops being a problem. Basically turn this unpleasant thought into just a thought that can come and go like any other. I hope something in there is useful to you. I hope that you have a great relaxing and fun trip!

I usually prepare myself for all what if scenarios. I reason them and go through them by writing them down and while focusing on positives of my trip or journey. I tell myself whatever it is, I am going to take it as an experience of life.

@kp4rra Hiya there!!! I am very sorry you are feeling this way! Travel anxiety can be sooo terrible, especially when going to see family. Constantly worrying about what to say. What to do, and to act. It can just be so overwhelming and scary!

Somethings that help me with visiting family is to just do my best to completely clear my mind! Distract my self with hobbies! And try to forget about my worries.

Sometimes in these types of situations its best just to let it come to you! Don't stress yourself out about what you are going to say and do, but when the day comes be yourself! Be you! Try to join some conversation, and have fun!

I'm sorry to hear you're experiencing some travel anxiety for this trip. I can see how difficult it is for you, worrying about possible panic attacks, being judged, or just not being able to deal with your anxiety. It's not easy. Have you considered looking into some mindfulness exercises? They could help in bringing you to the present moment, rather than experiencing all this anxiety about something that hasn't happened yet.
